my inspiron 530 won't connect to the internet with my ethernet cable

If I use my usb cable from my modem to my computer my internet works fine but if I use my ethernet cable my modem light that says ethernet just blinks and won't connect me to the internet so is my ethernet port damaged or is their something else i can do
