public wireless needs password, not network key

I am frequently having trouble connecting to public wireless networks that require a password.  When I try to connect, I am prompted to enter the network key, not a password.  It does not work to enter the password in the place of the network key.

I cannot find a way to change it to take a password instead.

I did not used to have this problem.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

royalty1,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Your network security key is your password.

So depending on what software you're using, usually you click on your wireless network icon. It will show you the wireless networks in your area. You click on the one you want to connect to. Confirm if it is WPA, WPA2 or WEP  encrypted. You enter your password and it should remember the password and connect to your wireless network in a minute or two.
