Help with configuring routing on 6248

Finally have some down time to rework our lab and bring in some new things.  Need some help on the networking, one of those things that was always setup in the lab and "just worked".  I've read through the Configuration Guide and it's helped a little, but need more of a step by step to help me out.

Going to use the 6248 as a backbone and connect 4 networks to it :

  • 10.10.0.0/16
  • 10.20.0.0/16
  • 10.30.0.0/16
  • 10.40.0.0/16

Each of these networks will have mutiple switches (5324's) coming off the 6248 going to different racks.  So I'm assuming I create 4 VLANS and then assign physical ports to these VLAN's and IP's to these VLAN's (10.10.0.1, 10.20.0.1, etc).  Then turn on the routing and it automagically works ?

I tried following the instructions on pages 66-68 of this guide - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/pc62xx/en/Config/config.pdf .  I upgraded to the latest firmware so the instructions in this guide don't match the Web GUI exactly.  Specifically the IP addresses on the VLAN show as "inactive" in the GUI, with no option to activate.

Can someone give me step by step directions of what I need to do to create this backbone ?  Do I need to create static routes, or will everything happen automatically once the IPs are configured on the VLAN and switches plugged in ?  Do I need to configure anything on the 5324's ?

Thanks for the help !

Post the config file of the 62xx switch and any additional information you have about your network.

You do not need static routes.

If you keep it simple, you will not have to configure anything on the 5324.

I reset the switch to defaults and then followed the examples from the config guide on pages 66-68 using the CLI over the serial console.  Works like a charm now.  My machine on the 10.10.0.0 network can successfully reach machines on the 10.30.0.0 network.  I guess there was something hosed in the config.  Always nice when you inherit switches :-)

Thanks.
