N2000: Updating CPLD on stack members

Hi!

We are managing our switches using OMNM.
When updating firmware on these:

1. How important is it to upgrade CPLD as well?
 - We can do this remote using "update CPLD" and it will perform a reboot.

2. But what about the stacks. When I run the command, it is only applied to the master switch?
- We can use the command 'devshell cpldUpdate' on serial connection to each member in the stack, but then we need to be onsite - which would be a enourmous job to do on all of our stacks..

What are your routines regarding CPLD and stack?

Another community member recently detailed their workaround to updating the CPLD. It involves reloading switches one at a time so that the backup switch becomes the master switch, updating the CPLD, and so on until all switches are up to date.

If you can afford the downtime, this would not require anyone to be onsite.

The only way I am aware of updating the CPLD on the stack members is by plugging into the serial cable and running the devshell command. I have not seen any other methods documented anywhere.

Thanks for your reply.

I understand that it is recommended to do the CPLD update on all switches.

But in the stacks, is it normal procedure to travel around to each site to do the update on stack members, or do network administrators generally just update the master switch'es CPLD remote ?

It is not normal to only update the master unit, this could produce undesirable behavior and become a roadblock for future updates.

How do I tell if each switch in the stack has the latest CPLD (20)?

You should be able to specifiy the switch at the end of the show command.

Example:

# show version 2
# show version 3
# show version 4
