Is the hard drive recognized in the BIOS[system setup]?

Is the power button LED, solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?

What is the reading of Diagnostic Lights on the back panel?

Dell's D-8100 Diagnostic Guide,

Have you tried running Dell diagnostics, to make certain the hard drive is functioning correctly?

You need to check the System Setup to see if the hard drive is recognized [shown] there. To enter the setup, restart the PC and when 'setup' is shown in the right top corner of the screen, push the F2 key.

See HERE

YYYG diagnostic lights, mean 'Another Failure' this could indicate either motherboard, or a hard drive failure.

Try running Dell Diagnostics extended test on the hard drive, you should find the instructions for this in your 8100 Owners Manual that was shipped with PC.

Try running Dell diagnostics extended test on the hard drive, using the Drivers and Utilities Resource CD.

You can find the instructions for running Dell Diagnostics HERE

You can either go to the hard drive manufacturer's website, download their Diagnostic software and burn it to floppy, assuming that 8100 has a floppy drive, or download Dell's 32 Bit Diagnostics HERE and create a set of floppies [diskettes] the instructions are on the download site.

Which version of windows is installed on the 8100?

Then you would need to buy an USB, external floppy drive and use it to create the floppy discs, or find a PC that has an internal floppy drive.
