Problems with Dell Inspiron 7520 SE

My dell Inspiron 7520 SE (4GB RAM, i7) has started to cause some problems.

1. The optical Drive makes a noise after every 5 minutes even though there is no DVD inside.

2. The graphic driver seems to crash with almost every game i play. Recently crashed with NFS MW'2012.

Can someone please help???

Some more queries-

1. Where am i supposed to call to get my screen replaced because it has dead pixels.

2. Can some please tell me any way to install the switchable graphics in Ubuntu 12.10 since it keeps running the dedicated GPU (HD7730m) at full power which reduces the battery life significantly.

Note: I am new here so i am sorry if i broke any guidelines for posting in these forums.

Check warranty status: http://dell.to/zEE2Cm

In case of expired warranty scenario, we would not be able to extend warranty entitled services.

If the warranty on the computer has expired, below link would help you in contacting expired warranty services (this is for US based customers):

Hi Rajesh,

I have a Dell Inpsiron Special Edition 15R, and I'm facing the same issue as well, the Optical Drive makes a noise every few minutes.

Especially when start some application or shut them down.

Hi Varun,

Update firmware from below link for the DVD drive.

Before updating firmware, check for the drive ID. Picture below would help you in finding the drive ID.

I have provided a link for firmware update:

  1. Visit the following website: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  2. Enter the Service tag of the computer in the box provided and click “Submit”.
  3. In the next page, click drop down arrow to select the Operating System which is installed in the computer.
  4. Now expand “Removable storage” and select the appropriate firmware and update.

Also, run MS fixit for DVD drive on the computer.

Click on the below mentioned link to Run Ms Fixit:

Hi Rajesh,

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I'm using Windows 8 Pro, and updating the drivers didn't help me, the drivers on the Dell website didn't work for my DVD Drive.

Although the MS Fixit utilty did seem to work. The drive has stopped making noises now.

Thank you, also I'll be getting in touch with you again if the problem arises again.

Thanks and Warm Regards,

Varun Rathore
