itunes messing up device driver

Hi everyone...hope is on the way?

I cannot seem to install itunes without messing up the dvd/cd device driver. message : windows annot load the device driver for this hardware because another instance of the device is still in memory.Code 38

I feel there are lots of others having this problem, have seen search posts on the web,but no solutions.

Had this problem before while I was still under waranty and Dell had me remove filters, now if I try that, my computer goes nuts and locks up, don't like messing with registry.   thanks for any help...meg415
