1650s and Dell optiplex 990

Hello, i was wondering whether a 1650s would work and fit in a Dell optiplex 990.

thanks

The 100w GTX 1650 SUPER will not work with standard 265w PSU.  It may actually be too much GPU for your CPU and the CPU may cause bottleneck.

What exact CPU do you have?

There are 23 benchmarks on userbenchmark.com of a Dell Optiplex 990 with a GTX 1650 Super in it.  So, seems this combo works, at least with certain 1650S models.

I agree on upgrading the PSU.

The only real limits on the GPU one can put in any machine are practical ones - is the PSU powerful enough, will it physically fit, and will there be heat/cooling issues?  That said, if performance of a specific application/game is limited by the CPU, upgrading the GPU may not make sense.

In the case of the Optiplex 990, if you have one of the 95W quad-cores CPUs (i7-2600 / 3.4 GHz, i5-2500 / 3.3 GHz, i5-2400 / 3.1 GHz), upgrading the GPU makes sense - it may or may not make sense with other CPUs.  I'd question the benefit of upgrading the GPU if you have one of the dual-core CPUs (i3-2120 / 3.3GHz, i3-2100 / 3.1 GHz).  But, it would work and would increase graphics performance - maybe not as much as you would like, though.

Which 990?  I'm assuming you have the MT, because a 1650 S won't fit in the other form factors.

I have a 790 MT with a 1650 Super.  I bought a standard ATX 450 watt PSU with PCIe power.  The PSU I chose was the EVGA 450 BR 80 Plus Bronze, and it works great.  All you need to do is unscrew the rear screws on the PSU, then push the tab inside, and the old one comes right out.

"I have a 600w psu and an intel xeon X5680"

The Xeon X5680 is a LGA 1366 socket CPU, while the Optiplex 990 has a LGA 1155 CPU socket (and Intel Q67 Express chipset).  They're incompatible.  Either you've got a Xeon X5680 CPU or a Optiplex 990, but not both - unless a different motherboard (like some Intel X58 chipset one) was put in a Optiplex 990 case.
