Optiplex 3020 MT, i7-4790 CPU upgrade, successful
After finding several inconclusive threads relating to upgrading the CPU on an Optiplex 3020 to an i7 CPU, I took a chance and purchased an i7-4790 @3.6GHz (with turbo to 4.0GHz) BX80646I74790.
For reference, my Optiplex 3020 MT was running an i5-4570 @3.2GHz (with turbo to 3.6GHz)
Before changing out the CPU, I updated the BIOS to the latest version (version A18 at the time of posting this message).
I retained Dell's bolt-on fan and heatsink, and used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.
I'm very happy with the performance increase from what is a relatively inexpensive upgrade.
Here are a few CPU-Z screenshots post upgrade.

Do you know if the OptiPlex 3020 MT supports the I7 4790K and the processors with
DevilCanyon architecture in general?

Do you happen to know what size screwdriver you used? I've been trying to take off my heat sink but I can't seem to get a screwdriver that will fit it, or it's stuck and I can't turn it.

Hi, sorry for the late response, I've only just seen this.
I can't personally speak for running an i7-4790K in the 3020 MT.
The 4th gen K series are still Haswell architecture (despite the Devils Canyon branding) so should work in theory, it just needs someone to test and confirm. Obviously if you are going to try it then make sure the BIOS is fully up to date to give it the best possible chance of success.
Good luck if you decide to give it a go, please update us if you are successful.

I used a medium sized pozidrive head screwdriver.
Specifically the second one from the right in this set: https://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/halfords-advanced-8-piece-screwdriver-set
From memory, the screws are sprung loaded, so push down at the same time as trying to unscrew them.

ended up finally getting it, took ages, it wasn't the screwdriver size. Pretty sure I used a #0 Phillips. I got my i7-4790 in successfully (upgraded from the i5 4590). One of my ram sticks stopped working so I had to take it out 😑

Nevermind, realized I didn't check if it was the slot and it looks like it was. Now I'm stuck on single channel ram.
Edit (1/5): both ram slots don't work now, one randomly stopped at working while I was using my PC.

Hi, can you post screenshots of all the tabs in CPUz.
I assume you updated the BIOS to the latest version before upgrading the CPU?

All sorted now, if anyone else encounters this problem-
Enable Hyper threads in bios> msconfig> boot> advanced options> number of processor:8
Thanks for the reply

Hi I tried your method. First enabling HT in bios, then once in windows in msconfing, I only can see 4 in number of processors not 8 like you described. When hyperthreading is enabled in bios, only 2 cores and 4 threads work and CPU is stuck at its stock clock speed and won't boost. When HT is disabled in bios, 4 cores 4 threads show in windows and CPU is boosting normally. Very strange behaviour. I can't get the hyperthreading to work. Can anyone help please?

Will i7 processors ending with K and P also work?
