As listed earlier.

The Q9650 has a 93% chance of success rate!!!

Remember to always update your BIOS to the latest version before doing any Memory or CPU upgrade.

say why first,  in 99% of cases it will do nothing.

what case is it, form factor as each size case  has unique motherboards,  and power limits, ok? non stated,

MT, DT, SFF, USFF????????? WHAT CASE PLEASE.

there are 2 answers.

what dell supports and tested and is in the users guide an answered here over 100 times. endless in the search box, type 760 CPU.?

2nd answer is what others have tried, in the full family. of processors that work with your chip set.

your chip set is.

Intel Q43 Express Chipset w/ICH10D

this and BIOS limits what works,  it also dictates what generation CPU run here, answer OLD and not good.

the guidebook shows this,

Q9650 MT

E8400  USFF case form factor , see not the same as MT and not state by you, 1 of 5 PCs.

I GUESS THE Usff does not run quad core CPU,. but im not uSFF expert in fact do not like them at all.

this is what is supported clear as day. as the guide states.

https://www.dell.com/downloads/ap/products/optix/optix_760_tech_guide.pdf

now JUST the Q43 limits, I do not know power limits on 4 motherboards , just the intel limit

and is. (intel.com no secrets there)  and best seen here IMO.

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/Q43_Express.html

it says the big dog is the same as the PC  MT , sold new with the option 2. Q9650 unless is USFF case. then not.

next time tell what PC you have first, even photos work.

I see these old PC sold as used refurbs made 11 year ago

and the seller yank out the $100 processor sell it and put in this junk (gen 1, $5 CPU  :Crying: ) what you have now , no clue at all.  this is like SUPER common practice on the refurb crowd.. I'd buy used 3020 and do way better. with $50

Intel Celeron
420

Optiplex 760 Tech Guide.pdf

Granted you don't have a USFF, the top CPU for your 760 is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650.  No Xeon's, no modded Xeon's, and not the QX9650; but those things might pop up on eBay.  Not only do many Xeon's not have integrated graphics as they're for a different machine, but socket types also vary.

If you change to a Q9650, you'll get 22% better performance according to game-debate; not really all that noticeable.

A good way to go for upgrades if you already have a quad:  SSD, then RAM, then CPU if you still want one.  SSD's breathe new life into older machines.  You'd be surprised at what a difference if makes to go from an HDD to an SSD.  Increasing RAM also increases speed.  Crucial is guaranteed to work in Dell's.

Game-debate Q9400 vs. Q9650

There's at least 5 different Core 2 Quad CPU's @ 2.66GHz.  That's why it's asked what CPU you have.  You know how to go into System in Control Panel or BIOS to see the model # of your CPU?  My using Q9400 above was a guess to get an idea of performance improvement.  Even if you could overclock to 3.0GHz for example, you still wouldn't see much improvement.

For some reason, today, I got an improvement range of 11-15% depending on which C2Q 2.66GHz CPU I started with.  In other words, miniscule.

There's no overclocking in an Optiplex that I know of.  Optiplex's are business machines, not necessarily built for gaming.  However, many people still game on them and add GPU's depending on which model they have.

It would help to know 3 things:  1. Size of your Optiplex (see photo in my post above).  Remember suggestions in that post also.  2. The CPU you have.  3. What you'd like to use the PC for - mainly gaming? Music? Videos?  Daily tasks like Word & Excel & Internet browsing?

Knowing the size speeds troubleshooting as internal components may vary from size to size.  Some people mention the specific game(s) they want their PC to handle. - Speedstep is one that's good with that one, meaning he can make recommendations based on the game.
