Can I Use a PSU from a Different Optiplex series? Looking to upgrade!

Hi Everyone!

Long story short, I have an optiplex 5090 SFF Pc and want to upgrade the PSU. The Dell sales team says the 300W is on back order.

My question is, can I use a PSU from a different optiplex series if it fits?

Thanks!

Yes you can certainly use a psu from 3080/5080/7080 MT/SFF in 5090 SFF.  they all have two white 4 pin cpu connectors.  Form factor is interchangeable in optiplex series 6 and 5.

the psu from 5050/5060/5070 etc. (series 5) etc. has only one 4 pin cpu.

the proprietary white 6 pin connector is ubiquitous in recent Dell models.

Re: 300w psu in back order.  You can also use psu for XPS 8940 or Inspiron G5 5000.  They are compatible w 5090.

Optiplex 5080/7080 and 5090/7090 psu has two white 4 pin cpu connectors because for the first time Dell offers higher than 8 core cpu and -k cpu w TDP up to 125W in the series 6.  In previous series 5 for example optiplex 5070, there was no -k cpu offered and cpu is up to 8 core.  TDP was up to 65w. So one 4pin cpu connector was sufficient.  Comes in 7080/7090, you got some cpu having 10 core and some -k cpu of TDP up to 125w.  Dell engineers had to design a new psu w two 4 pin cpu connector to support those high power cpu.

so if your 5090 SFF does not have a 10 core or -k cpu, you may consider use older optiplex series 5 psu (for example for 5070) with only one 4 pin too.  This would be considered off label use of Dell product.

I’ll be honest, that’s a lot of technical stuff that I don’t quite understand.

It’s a 6 core…not sure what the “-k” cpu is

11th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-11600, 12 MB Cache, 6 Core, 12 Threads, 2.8 GHz to 4.8 GHz, 65 W

PS  The -k cpu below are unlocked cpu that one can overclock. they are offered in the high end tier 7090 model.  but they are also compatible with 5090.

11th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-11700K, 16 MB Cache, 8 Core, 16 Threads, 3.6 GHz to 5.0 GHz, 125 W

Ok got it.

I’m having a tough time finding a power supply to meet my needs.

AsI’m having a tough time finding a power supply to meet my needs.

As far as I can understand I have to get a proprietary or third-party power supply that fits about 22.5 x 6.5 x 8.5 cm.

am I right to assume that Dell never made a power source for small form factor above 300 watts.  I’d like to get 500 watts.

I did a few hours of searching for power supplies for the models as you suggested, but had a very hard time finding anything over 250.

Additionally, do you know if the power supplies are different sizes between tower, sff, and micro?

Dell does make 500w, 460w and 360w psu in the Thin Form Factor (TFX).

2VD0G 360w Liteon
5K7J8 500w Delta
99TPH 500w Liteon
Y7R0X 500w Chicony

4FWF7 460W Chicony

HG9XD 460W, Acbel

92WNC 460W, Liteon

Re: do you know if the power supplies are different sizes between tower, sff, and micro?

The tower and SFF use same form factor psu.  Micro is different.

Re: I have to get a proprietary or third-party power supply that fits about 22.5 x 6.5 x 8.5 cm.

best compatible psu would be the Dell oem ones I listed above.  Only Dell makes the proprietary white 6 pin and two white 4 pin psu.  you can also get a third party SFX psu and then use a 24 to 6 pin adapter.  but the Dell case does not have mounting holes for the SFX so the SFX would be sitting loose in the case.
