Can I use NVMe M.2 SSD for my Dell OptiPlex 760 (2009 Model)?

Hello guys,

I need some help with regards of using NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD into my Dell OptiPlex 760 mini tower.
This is an old SSD after upgrading my Dell XPS laptop. I want to utilize and make use of it to save some money.

Is there any way i can use this SSD to maximize speed into the 760 model? If not, is there any other alternative or adapters to use to make it work and detected in BIOS?

I want to maximize its speed and use it as a boot drive where OS is installed.

Thanks in advance.

@redxps630

"Compatible with PCIe 3.0 motherboards, and backward compatible with PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 1.0"

that is totally wrong.

PCI-E 2.1 and 3.0 are compatible forward until version 4.0 which uses totally different line code again none of them are backwards compatible with. 2.0 and 1.1 line code or power specifications or clock speed.

The line code for earlier versions of PCI-E is 8b/10b

Line code for PCI-E 2.1 and 3.0 is 128b/130b

older bus clocks are  incompatible.  This is a known issue as early as 2009 and windows 7.  Fitting into the slot does not mean it works.

Furthermore the only thing that works in the X16 slot is a video card.

Other cards will not post and the system will halt saying invalid video configuration.

No. This is not ever working.

UEFI booting and PCI-E Express 3.0, USB3 are not part of your system.

PCI-E booting requires 128b/130b line code and double PCI-E bandwidth and UEFI GPT boot mode.

The alternative is to use a SATA SSD that simply takes the place of an HDD.  I used a Crucial SSD in my previous 755 and it flew.  Western Digital is also a good brand along with others.

Optiplex 760 has Q43 chipset which supports PCI Express Revision1.1

x4 PCI Express to M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter

Compatible with PCIe 3.0 motherboards, and backward compatible with PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 1.0

for storage only, can not boot from it.
