Dell Optiplex 3020 Mini Tower PC upgrade video graphics card etc

Hi so, I've managed to find tucked away a Dell Optiplex 3020 Mini Tower and would like to spec this up during the lockdown for some gaming needs.

It's the Intel Core i5 4th Gen and has 8GB ram.

I've got a 240GB SSD I'm already going to put in but I want to talk graphics cards.

I've seen lots of questions around the right graphics cards. Mainly because power supply is limited?

I've seen older posts which is saying the 1050 would be fine. Others saying about the newer 1030 but never seem to get a definitive answer as some say you can use it then others say only if you upgrade the power supply

Sane, simple answers appreciated - oh also. Since this is a bit of fun project, if anyone has any other upgrade recommendations for this build then let me know

Thanks

YouTube List  Your 3020 will take a GTX 1050 ti.

What exact CPU do you have?  One way to check bottleneck - In the Google search bar, for example, "I5-4690 GTX 1050 ti bottleneck."  Anything below 10% is good.

Going from quad core to quad core CPU usually doesn't yield much improvement.  I am still posting a screengrab with borrowed post below as to top CPU for your 3020.

One example, going from I5-4690 to I7-4790 would only yield 18% performance improvement (according to game-debate) = basically not noticeable.  Noticeable is when it's almost double.

By the way, if you want to go higher with GPU's, one can check YouTube videos.  Also, PSU's in MT's are upgradeable.

GTX 1650 is still only 75w.  But if you used a 120w GTX 1660, PSU would need upgrading..

If you have i5-4570 or i5-4590, GTX 1050Ti is perfect match.

Graphic card and processor will work great together

Intel Core i5-4590 (Clock speed at 100%) withNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 0.12% of bottleneck

Intel Core i5-4570 (Clock speed at 100%) withNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 0.67% of bottleneck.

1050ti recommended psu is 300W. your stock psu is 290W. no need to upgrade psu.

Thank you - it's the i5-4590.

What is the max wattage you can use on the 3020 mini tower with the standard power? I don't seem to get that answer anywhere.

Also those pictures aren't loading for some reason

Thank you! Yes it's the i5-4590 - Do you think that's the best (for price) out there or would you be recommending any other for this machine? It's a little pricey from what I've seen on reviews online!

Do you mean the maximum psu wattage in Optiplex 3020 Mini Tower?  No limit.  Any standard ATX psu coupled w 24 to 8 pin adapter will work in this model. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Power-ATX-Cable-24pin-To-8pin-For-DELL-Optiplex-3020-7020-9020-30CM-USA/202978115333?hash=item2f42703f05:g:PYQAAOSwwDdeoBPk

If you mean the Dell OEM psu for 3020, default base model is 290W.  optional model is 365W, DP/N T1M43 or 7VK45.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-For-DELL-OPTIPLEX-9020-3020-T1M43-365W-POWER-SUPPLY-/142871148989

Yes, so on the OEM what would you suggest would be the max wattage on a graphics card without upgrading the psu? will help me narrow my search down

Dell OEM psu for 3020, default base model is 290W.  optional model is 365W, DP/N T1M43 or 7VK45.

A graphics card that has recommended system psu of 300W will work. Examples are GTX 1050/1050Ti.  Older cards include GTX 750/750Ti.  Card TDP should not exceed 75W as the stock psu does not have a 6 pin power connector, so the card has to draw 100% of its needed power from PCIex16 slot.
