Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF graphics card upgrade - questions

Hello,

I've got a Dell 9020 SFF pc with i7 4790, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD. And integrated graphics Intel HD4600. I want to upgrade this to play GTA V. I've searched the net and read a lot about it but im confused. On the Dell official site the most powerful dedicated card to 9020 SFF is Radeon 8570, but will it improve performance? I have read also about Radeon R7 250 that should be ok:

Karta Radeon R7 250 2GB DDR3 128bit LowProfile - Części komputerowe, Karty graficzne - Allegro.pl

I know that there is a lot of fastest cards like GT 1030 or GTX 1050 but what about stock psu and cooling in such a small pc? Will it handle this? And will they work properly plugged into this short slot?

Sorry for my english

Regards

These low profile OEM card have tiny fans which have to spin at relatively higher rpm to cool the card, even though the card TDP is only 50W.  Higher rpm entails louder fan.  Gpu temp looks good.

when you are about to order gt1030 (TDP 30W), if fan noise is a big concern, you might consider those 1030 design with passive heatsink without fan.  to help its cooling your case needs to have good air flow.  SFF case tends to have poor air flow compared to DT or MT. This may all be over worrying considering it is a low power card.

Re: Radeon 8570 as dedicated card to my pc, but will it improve performance? Or maybe something like this: Karta Radeon R7 250 2GB DDR3 128bit LowProfile - Części komputerowe, Karty graficzne - Allegro.pl ?

I know that there is a lot of fastest cards like GT 1030 or GTX 1050 but what about stock psu? Will it handle this? And will they work properly in this short slot?

both Dell recommended Radeon 8570 and R7 250 are basic entry level discrete graphics card. Depending on what your app is. For gaming do not expect too much out of those unless you run some old game or at low settings and resolution. R7 250 is 30% faster than 8570.

1030 can be supported by stock 255W psu. 1050 is an intriguing card with 75W TDP. Typically Dell optiplex has 25W max rated power for PCIex16 slot in SFF, but user has posted video of running 1050/1050Ti in 9020 with 60fps gaming performance. my speculation is you can run these cards p, but you might run into issue pushing card to top performance.

your English is good and easy to understand.

@redxps630 Ok, I understand. So generally, 1030 is the fastest card I can add with no worries? But what about comparison between HD4600 and 8570 and R7 250? Are those cards worth installing? 4600 is much slower or maybe even better in combination with my CPU?

It all depends on what your video app is.

hd8570 is 130% faster than Intel HD4600. R7 250 is 200% faster than 4600.

gt1030 is 80% faster than R7 250.

This link tells you what games R7 250 can play, often meeting minimum requirements but not recommended.

What do you mean by video app? I use my pc to standard home&office apps. Nothing heavy. But from time to time it would be nice to play GTA 4 and 5 - I ended playing on San Andreas years ago

wow 130% faster is good. I can buy the HD8570 in mint condition for $45 - I think it is good deal. R7 250 is $70. 1030 is $110.

I don't know which to buy, cause my pc never be good for gaming and page from your link suggest that GTA V will run fine only on 1030. But on the other side there are some videos on youtube where people playing GTA V on HD4600 and it looks quite good e.g. GTA 5 Pc Intel 4600 HD - I7 4790K FPS Frame Rate Performance Test - YouTube

HD8570 will make this looks much better?

By video app I mean the games you play, the settings and resolutions, and targeted fps.

average user benchmark GTAV fps for i7-4790 and Intel HD4600 (desktop) integrated is 34 fps.

GTAV minimal gpu hd4870 is 200% faster than HD4600 and 30% faster than 8570.
in other words the integrated gpu hd4600 is 200% slower than minimal required gpu for GTA V.  you can still play the game but video quality may be quite poor.

hd4870 is very close to R7 250.  so for occasional play of GTAV R7 250 is better choice than HD8570.

GTAV recommended gpu hd7870 is 300% faster than 8570.

GTAV minimal system requirement

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs) / AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs) @ 2.5GHz
  • Video Card: NVIDIA 9800 GT 1GB / AMD HD 4870 1GB (DX 10, 10.1, 11)

    GTAV recommended system requirement

    Processor: Intel Core i5 3470 @ 3.2GHZ (4 CPUs) / AMD X8 FX-8350 @ 4GHZ (8 CPUs)
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB / AMD HD7870 2GB

Ok, everything is clear. Every of this card will be an upgrade, 8570 the smallest (maybe for GTA 4 it'll be ok), 1030 the biggest. 8570 and R7 240 are dedicated cards (can't see R7 in documentation but it looks very similar) so there should be no problems, but with GT1030 there won't be problems with temperature in SFF? I think I buy this card - the price is high, but its brand new.

Oh, I forgot to ask about one thing. I read in the net that cards dedicated to Dells have decreased TDP, e.g. 8570 to 24W - Solved: Graphics card for OptiPlex 9020 SFF - Dell Community is it true? If so, this cards could be slower than HD4600 and installing them doesnt make any sense. Somebody wrote there that R7 didnt work on 9020 SFF.

Thats why im so confused with these cards...

Gt1030 (TDP 30W) is more energy efficient than hd8570 (TDP 50W) or R7 250 (65W).

8570 exceeds GTA4 recommended gpu ATI3870  (8570 is 30% faster than 3870)

  • Graphics Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600+ / 512MB ATI 3870+

AMD Radeon R series card may cause boot problem with uefi bios secure boot.  You need to disable secure boot in bios. the link you provided also has another user happy with R7 250.  your experience may vary.

detailed tech spec of hd8570 (OEM).

being a careful consumer entails a learning experience, which can be confusing at the beginning.

I see, thanks. And the last question: HD7570 is also available in shop near me. It is 1GB DDR5 version. Is it better in gaming then HD8570 with 1GB DDR3? (in your link in upper post is 2GB version). Same price.

Thanks for the reply, my PC stays on the table right next to monitor about 50cm from my head so I can hear everything Maybe card was laying for a long time cause after ~1 hour of work i feel it more queit. 1030 with passive cooling wont fit into SFF - the card is too high (36mm). Mine have 16mm and there is only ~10mm to psu. I can put PC down on the floor but dont wanna do this cause there like to be much dust etc.

Ok, what I understood from that comparisons HD8570 is better one(?). Today I've installed it and drivers and planning to play GTA IV, when I go to V I'll change card to GT1030. What I see the fan sound is noticebly, not very loud or making any bad noises, but without card my pc was silent as the grave. At idle is fixed 30% with GPU temp. 31-32 st C. Is that normal?

I want to get a refurb of the very same Optiplex & have a packed Nvidia GT 640 card I once used with my old XPS 400 refurb; since it's an older, lower end gaming card, will it work for this particular model?
