Dell Optiplex 3020

i5 4570

8gb ram

thermaltake 650w

r9 390x

all fans spin and work in gpu it’s in the pcie slot but no video when I connect the hdmi.. I tried updating bios to a19 still don’t work and turning off legacy boot and making sure everything is uefi. Do I need to upgrade my motherboard ?

Hi @K24dj ,

Just clarify if you already connected both 6-pin and 8pin power socket? It's a 275w GPU and would not run by connecting only 1 of the sockets.

As for the BIOS video setting, hook up the video to integrated then load the BIOS (F2 at boot usually) and check out the Video settings - there will be one with "Primary Graphics/Display" or similar and there are usually choices like Auto , Integrated/Intel HD, and Dedicated/PCIe.

You want the Dedicated one, or whatever option is not Auto or Integrated, which with Intel CPUs are essentially the same thing - boot to Integrated.

1. Any way to fix that ? 2. It’s a 650w it’s fairly new only 3 months old worked fine before and still is working 3. Card works no doubt and pcie slot is good

Yes I did :) I used to have an fx8350 build and it worked before my power supply has a 2 8 pins well they are both 6+2s.

There are really 3 primary reasons why it wouldn't work:

1) BIOS is set to boot to integrated video.

2) Power cables to video card are either not connected or the PSU isn't supplying enough power.

3) Defective video card or PCIe slot.

Thanks for the help no one has actually told me that yet but unfortunately I think it’s really true this motherboard doesn’t support my graphics card :( only auto and intel hd show up.

I’ve checked all connections and trust me I have the proper cables as it worked in my previous build no problem. It didn’t work on a Dell Vostro but that had an old a06 bios and didn’t support uefi. And uefi is turned on and I updated to latest bios and sadly it doesn’t

Ah, that means it's probably not lighting up and I would really confirm that the correct power connectors are being used - you might need an adapter if something is not exactly right. Ensure the connections are firm and maybe take out and reinstall the card to the PCIe slot and power connectors just to be sure.

A video card like this is not compatible or incompatible, it's a PCIe standard, but if its not getting enough juice or the power connectors aren't right, then you'll get symptoms exactly like this - fans spin up but it's not recognized by the system. It's like a car engine, and needs that shot of PSU power to fully fire up.

I would really concentrate on the power cables - you said they were both 6+2, so switch them around, with the one in the 6-pin socket going to the 8-pin on the card, and vice versa. Make sure they're flush and check the connectors and video card to make sure no pins are bent.

Also, do you have UEFI BIOS enabled?

That seems to be a requirement with many PCIe 3.0 video cards, and I believe the Optiplex 3020 supports UEFI. Also check to see if your card has a UEFI/non-UEFI switch or jumper, as that's the easiest way.

Hi @K24dj ,

Check out these two threads from tom's and msi forum with similar problem on R9 390X. Recommendations on both cases point to power sockets connection. Especially the one from msi forum, the questioner solve it himself by re-allocate PSU cables.

As you mentioned BIOS didn't even recognize the new GPU, very likely that the GPU was not powered correctly. Try to unplug both 8 & 6pin sockets and exchange those two 6+2pin power cords for them. Solution from the tom's case also advised:

"When you have a 6+2 style cable, make sure to mate the two together properly before inserting them into the sockets on the GPU. Make sure they are 100% home and clicked in place."

I googled a bit more about "r9 390x not work on some motherboard" and really lots returned. Probably not a compatibility problem of your Optiplex 3020 but poor design of the 390x. Good luck man!

@K24dj  already mentioned it's a Thermaltake 650w PSU, not a stock one.

The 3020 stock power supply DOES NOT SUPPORT 75W or greater cards.

Beyond that Secure Boot Must be OFF and Legacy CSM ON.

The 3020 uses Proprietary 8 pin power supply so that's a third Issue.

Thermaltake 650w  power supply is not nearly enough for 475W of 12v power Just for the video card.

Thats 40 AMPS on the Aux power connectors alone.

I would say 850W would be bare minimum for this.

8 pin  Implies 325W and the additional 6 pin imply's 150W more.

Note the difference
