Optiplex 3010 MT, 120mm fan

I've installed a 3 pin 120mm case fan into my 3010 MT and connected it to the empty FAN_SYS1 header. The fan spins when the machine boots then does nothing, even with fan control override set in bios. Either way the fan will not stay on. Will a standard case fan not run off these headers? I'm considering getting a Y-splitter for the rear exhaust fan (FAN_SYS2) and putting both on the same header. Any insight would be very helpful. Service tag is by the way

Dell does not use standard wiring or Pinouts on their fan headers.

Dell fan wires are deliberately swapped round.

PWM and Tach and 12v and Ground.

For 3 wire they reverse 12v and tach.

This can lead to self destruction for a dell fan on standard motherboard or the other way round.

Even with the 12v and tach wires reversed the fan will not spin. Tried FAN_SYS2 header and get a fan related error in bios as well. Is there a known workaround for using standard fans with a dell motherboard or am I going to have to buy a fan controller?

Plugging standard fan on reversed may have burnt out the fan AND may have burnt out the fan power on the motherboard and permanently damaged the sensor. Thats why I said self destruct.

You are also not paying attention to the order and the wires.

Its not 2 wires swapped its all 4.

im having the same problem i bought a dell 3010 42p49  motherboard and put in a normal micro  atx case

and it came with 2 3 pin standerd fans so i just need to swap the 12v and tach on a 3 pin connection  and i should be good? i havent turned it on with the fan in the 3 pin connection so it shouldn't have burned https://imgur.com/a/LPucOtE out

there is no standards here,   (the trend for non OEM PC;s is here)

do not just throw any fan in to any PC, or wreck the fan or the mobo or both.

even when wired right using correct adaptors the dell sees the RPM wrong and fails with F1 hard errors

the cure is use only DELL FANS. OK?

if it don't fit do this.

see the end of this HS page for the many fan pinouts

PC  rules, do not force connectors on wrong. if locked as many are do not force them off, use the lock lever.

do not wire things up to any mobo backwards, or BOOM happens , you let the smoke out.

there is 1 right way  and 10,000 smoke ways,  ask first , and prevent smoke. ok?

Dell assumes you use only dell parts, if you depart from that, you need to know how it works first.

or ask

3 wire fans may run but they will not be detected as valid.

For 3 wire they reverse 12v and tach.

You must use 4 wire fan for a 4 wire fan.

Both 3 wire and 4 wire fans are not standard wiring.

Dell doesn't use non standard fans they have non standard wiring.

So you either use an adapter or you re wire the fan to work correctly.

Dell  swaps the wires around so that you will fry a dell fan on standard and the other way round.

It has 5 pins but only 4 wires are used.  3 wire DELL fans have the same issue where the pins are swapped.

Dell does not publish this. And some dells use standard wiring.

I believe this is correct.

YMMV

Just wondering on a 3 pin fan standard atx plug, soldering reverse red yellow to meet Dell's standards plug will work, for a FAN_SYS2 to insert a second case fan, soldering is just a minute fix, will it fix it?
