Optiplex 7040 sff psu upgrade

Hey.

I have a optiplex 7040 sff where i would like to have more gpu power. Problem is that original 180w AC180ES-00 psu would be a bottleneck to more powerhungry gpu. I have read at dell vx372 315w powersupply would work whit out any modification. Can someone confirm this to me?

Thank you.

vx372 315w is for optiplex XE2.  if you look at pic of that psu and compare with 7040 psu closely, the psu cases are designed differently.  I am not sure if will fit the 7040 sff case tbh.

if you look at mounting screw holes, they also seem different.

Just wanted to say that I just did this with a 7040 SFF. The XE2 fits but not properly. Only one screw hole lines up but I can shut the case confidently.

I plan to put a 1650 LP in it and stick it behind my bedroom TV.

hi! i want to upgrade the 7040 sff and put the 1650 low profile in there but i also am unsure about the psu. i want to upgrade the it and i saw the 315w psu. If i use an adapter and use a small psu with maybe like 400w, would this fit and work in the pc? thanks!

How loud is your setup when idle? I plan to have it as a 24/7 server in my bedroom as well but im worried about the fan noise

Optiplex XE3 SFF 300w PSU might be a better fit.  Yes, there's adapters.  But what I don't know is if one can go from 6-pin to 8-pin with the power.  Just the same, one can't go from 8-pin to 24-pin with power to the MB.
