Honestly, Is OVM 3.0 a Bare Metal Hypervisor?

Again, I’m reading the “Oracle VM User’s Guide Release 3.0 for x86 E18549-03” on page 1 – 2 section entitled, “1.1.2 Hypervisor” Oracle lists Oracle VM as a “Type 1: native or bare metal” hypervisor. Also on page 1-4 under section 1.3 Xen Technology oracle says, “The Xen hypervisor is a small, lightweight bare metal hypervisor for x86 compatible computers”. This is this some blatant marketing in a technical user guide OR is Xen truly a bare mental hypervisor??

Yes,

Xen (developed in Cambridge UK) is an open source hypervisor, and the core of many commercial hypervisors like Citrix Xenserver. See http://xen.org/files/Marketing/WhyXen.pdf - however VMware Vsphere is by far the most stable, hardend, scalable and versatile with API's, integrated application development and deployment platforms, and ecosystem of other vendors.

There is now a generation of "hypervisor" or cloud managers ... such as EMC IONIX ITO (OEM from iWave) and Citrix Cloudstack .. that can automate and manage multiple server farms and hypervisors such as VMware ESX, Xenserver, Oracle VM, Microsoft Hyper-V etc

I have some blogs on this on ONE EMC. For Cloud IaaS, EMC IONIX ITO (IT Orchestrator) is the most comprehensive for developing the self-service portal, automated network, server and storage provisioning and billing etc, orchestrating other EMC and VMware products like UIM, Prosphere, Solutions enabler SYMAPI etc, ITO can also manage Solaris Sparc, AIX, HPUX - that can also partition into multiple machines like x86 hypervisors.

Thanks for your reply. I'm very much interested in researching this topic and created a blog based upon my findings. Check it out here: https://community.emc.com/community/connect/everything_oracle/blog/2011/12/15/oracle-vm-server-xen-architecture-knowledge-is-power Xen 3.0 is a bare bone hypervisor that prefers the use of paravirtualization and why not as performance is very good with parvirtualized drivers. I hope to create another blog about Xen next week.
