R730XD Exessive Fan Speed

Got a dell R730XD and for some reason, the fans are running at ~50% PMW and making a lot of noise. and most likely filling everything with dust faster than it needs to. the air is coming out cool to the hand at the back of the chassis.

Also, we've got another R730XD running right above this one and the fans are completely quite on it. what's triggering the excessive fan speed on this machine? I've included a picture of the fans on the issue machine. Any help would be appreciated.

Fan speed on the server also depends on the number of cpu, dimm and cards also. Is both server have same configuration? Can you also check whether the server have latest iDRAC and BIOS FW.

Is fan speed increased recently after any changes on the server or it was like this from beginning?

Hello @jwsl224,

On the same iDRAC can you check the hardware inventory and make sure they both have exactly the same components? Any variation could explain the fan speed difference. You can also check BIOS configuration and see if there are any differences.

Regards.

Hi Diage,

here is a shot of the fan info for each chassis, first the quite one, then the loud one.

Do both systems have the same CPUs? Can you power off and unplug to drain the flea power and reconnect power and boot up and see if it is still happening?

no, the quite one has 2x Intel Xeon E5-2678 v3, and the loud one has 2x Intel Xeon E5-2623 v4

draining the flee power does help, sir.

Do you happen to have any PCIe devices installed, if so what are they?

If you do have PCIe devices installed, if you remove them do the fans slow?

Also, in the iDrac web GUI under Hardware-Fans-Fan Config, what is that currently set at?

Let us know.

I apologize for that. I did notice that on the quiet one the thermal setting is at Default, where the loud on is showing as set to Minimum.

If you change that is there any change?

Hi, if I may- apart from the CPU-does the loud one have the same number of HDDs as the quite one? There really can be a lot of reasons for fan noises. ( The HDDs located at the front could block the fanning/ventilation I was thinking)

both of them have about half of the front bays filled with drives. why isn't there a setting that lets me more precisely control the fan speed? also, the fans aren't even running at the same speed. it seems there's a software issue somewhere with it...
