Adding an HD to PE1950. SAS or SATA?
Hi, I have a PE1950 with a 2.5" x 4 backplane and PERC 5i. Currently it has 3 x 2.5" SAS drives on a RAID 5 configured single volume. I want to add a large capacity 2.5" drive in the empty 4th slot and use it as a single-disk backup volume. Must I purchase a SAS drive or can I use a SATA drive? Also, if SATA is a possibility, which interposer and caddy will I need, if any?

As long as you are going to use the fourth drive by itself, you can use EITHER SAS or SATA, and it will need to be configured in a single-disk RAID 0.

An interposer (for SATA) is not usually required. SAS does not require an interposer. I would recommend purchasing a drive WITH the caddy ... either by calling Dell or from a supplier:

Thanks! Yes, I will use RAID 0 for it. Would you happen to know anything about the caddy and interposer requirements or part numbers for 2.5" SATA drives? Thanks again!

Follow-up: I thought I should share and confirm that indeed a 2.5" SATA HD works perfectly on a PE1950 with 2.5" x 4 Backplane. I received the drive today and I installed it as a single drive independently of the existing RAID 5 array. Note: when installing a 2.5" SATA drive in the caddy, screw in the drive into the caddy into screw-holes that are NOT labeled SATAu. I think the SATAu screw-holes are for installing the drive with an interposer, which is not necessary in my case.
Materials and Configuration:
Drive: WD 1TB 2.5" Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT
Caddy: KF248
RAID: 0
