Cannot update drive firmware in R510
Running Win2k8R2, I donwloaded the latest SUU, and ran the autoupdate for everything. The disk firmware update failed.
So I downloaded the new firmware directly, and tried to run the updater, but it failed again
Here's the information:
Chassis Model | PowerEdge R510 |
System Revision | II |
Name | PERC H700 Integrated |
State | Ready |
Firmware Version | 12.10.4-0001 |
Driver Version | 4.31.01.64 |
Physical Disk 0:0:0 | Online | Spun Up | SAS | HDD | KS65 | Yes | 931.00GB | 931.00GB | 0.00GB | No | SEAGATE | ST31000424SS | 9WK0ZMHG | TH0U738K2123307D01Y9A00 | 6.00 Gbps | 6.00 Gbps | 05 | 29 | 2010 | 5000C500211625D1 | |||
The firmware I tried to update to is KS6B,A06
Log:
The version of this Update Package is newer than the currently installed version.
Software application name: ST31000424SS Firmware
Package version: KS6B
Installed version: KS65
Executing update...
Device: ST31000424SS, Application: ST31000424SS Firmware
The operation was not successful because the device buffer write has failed. Run diagnostics to verify configuration and try again.
Any ideas are welcome

There is an architectural constraint with Dell’s DUP HDD firmware update utility, related to system memory utilization, which is typically encountered on systems with minimal system memory, memory-intensive configurations (multiple RAID controllers), or memory-intensive applications.
This error is most likely to be seen when running Windows 2008 server with less than 8GB of memory. However, it is possible to run into the problem on servers that have more than 8GB of memory and servers running Windows 2003.
Subsequent attempts to update the HDD firmware may succeed, particularly if system resources are freed up. Booting from the SBUU CD to flash offline may also address resource limitations in lean memory servers, by booting into a minimal environment. Optionally, the Nautilus HDD firmware update utility has no such limitations. Booting into safe mode will free up sufficient resources to use the online DUP.
Hope this helps resolve your updating issue. Please contact me if you continue to have the same error after trying the other options.

Interesting, this machine only has 4Gb of memory, so it is quite possible that I'm hitting the issue you describe. Could you please elaborate on what Nautilus is, I've never heard of this utility before
Thanks

The Nautilus utility is normally supplied by Seagate; however on this drive they have deferred their update on the OEM drive to Dell. So this reduces your ability to update to either the SBUU CD outside the OS or update in safe mode.

I have this same error with these segate drives and updater... running MD1000 disk array on Windows Server 2008 x64 with 24GB of ram (so no memory issues!) what is the solution if the updater doesn't work? replace all the drives under warranty and hope they come with new firmware???

I had this issue too, with a DELL PowerEdge R710 and I solved it stopping some services (antivirus, BITS, wuauserv, etc.). After stopping the services, the firmware upgrade succeeded.
