Do I need another SCSI cable to add a HDD to 2850?
Hello,
We bought a stock PE 2850 with 2 73GB Ultra 320 80 Pin Drives.
As it stands, the Hard Drives are installed in bays 0 & 1 by Dell. There is a 68 pin cable going from SCSI port A in the HDD bay area to the SCSI port A connected behind them on the side of the main chassis.
I want to buy a PERC4/ei kit, an additional HDD cage, and another Maxtor drive, so I can do RAID5.
My computer was shippedwith the 1x6 Hard Drive backplane.
If I connect another HDD (I'll put it in HDD bay 2), do I need to hook up another SCSI cable to port B in order for the system to detect it? If I simply add another drive to the setup, is it going to be on the chain connected to port A?
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Brian,
It will always be seen on SCSI A in the third slot (ID2). The SCSI B connectors when connected to a SCSI or RAID controller changes the BP from a single channel with 6 drives, to a dual channel with 3 drives on each channel. SCSI A in 2x3 mode accesses ID 0, 1, and 2, and SCSI B accesses ID 3, 4, and 5. If only SCSI B is connected only ID 3,4, and 5 will be seen, if only SCSI A is connected all 6 drives are seen thru SCSI A.

I just ordered a 2850 and found a 15K scsi drive w/ 68 pins relatively cheap, elsewhere. If I understand the first post, will it support both 80 pin and 68 pin drives without getting an adapter?
TIA
