How to add new SATA HDD to existing PowerEdge 800 server

Hello.

We have a DELL PowerEdge 800 server with 4 meg RAM, Two Seagate Barracuda 80GB SATA HDD ST380013AS on SATA 0 and SATA 1 motherboard ports.  Our operating System is Windows SBS2003, SP2.

We do not want to install a new operating system or replace any HDD.  We just want to add more HDD space.

We are attempting to add a new Seagate 500 GB SATA HDD ST3500418AS to the SATA 2 port.  After connecting the new HDD to SATA port 2 and attaching the power cable, we started the server and entered the System Setup Program using F2.

The System Setup Program shows the Integrated Devices/SATA Controller as “RAID Mode”.  Don’t understand why, since we don’t have a RAID card installed.  However, the documentation for our system shows this for a description of SATA Controller:

“Allows the integrated SATA controller to be set to Off, ATA, or RAID. Off disables the SATA subsystem. ATA sets the SATA subsystem to Native IDE mode. RAID sets the SATA subsystem to RAID mode.

NOTE: RAID mode supports two drives (0 and 1). ATA mode supports all four drives.”

ATA Mode seems like the choice that we should make for this setup option.  After changing to the ATA Mode and restarting our system, we get this message:

“Warning: Detected mode change from RAID Mode to ATA Mode on the embedded SATA Controller.

Data loss will occur!

Press (Y) to confirm the change, press any other key to cancel”.

Since we were not ready to lose any data, you can guess that we pressed any other key and did not press “Y”.  Our system booted normally.

How do we add the new HDD without losing the data we already have?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Did you ever get a fix for this? We are experiencing exactly the same problem.
