Options on best way to increase IOS performance on my PowerEdge R720
I am tasked with setting up SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 CU2 and SQL Server Standard Edition 2012 W SP1 onto a PowerEdge R720 Server:
Dell PowerEdge R720 64 bit
SCSI Controller – Dell Perc H310 SCSI Disk Device
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
Processor – Intel Xeon CUP E5-2640 v2 @ 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz (2 processors)
64 GB of Memory
4 1TB drives that are SATA spinning at 7.2K
Anyhow my Disk Drives aren't able to support the IOS needed for SCCM and SQL. Since this is my only choice of server I would like ideas on how to increase the performance?

Ah I understand! Thanks for the detailed explanation, I will request for an upgrade of the controller then!

You biggest issue with this setup is the H310 controller and the SATA disks. The H310 has no cache on the controller which limits performance dramatically. Upgrade the controller to a H710 and the SATA disks to SAS or SSD.

Agree with Serverdude, the H310 without WB cache is more suited for doling out small text files, it is a cripple.
Performance tuning.......

Thank you for the quick reply, the feedback points me in the right direction. What do you think about installing a DRAC? Or should I just bite the bullet and upgrade the controller?

The R720 already has the IDrac Express and Enterprise integrated, The iDrac Express comes standard but the iDrac Enterprise requires a license to activate. The Express gives you remote management from a webpage GUI to gather logs and power server on/off. If you license the Enterprise you get virtual console (think of it as RDP for the hardware) the ability to mount ISO's to install a OS remotely and a dedicated management port. Neither the iDrac Express or Enterprise have anything to do with performance. If you are looking to improve read/write performance dramatically, start with replacing the controller.

I was able to get approval for a complete new server! I just want to verify with the expertise of others that the specs I am requesting is more than sufficient for our SCCM server? The only thing I am going to change will be doubling the memory from 32 GB to 64GB
PowerEdge R730 Server
Thanks!
