PE R340 not seeing entire 18TB Hard disk with PERC 730p

Hi there,

I recently purchased a Western Digital 18TB SAS drive (WUH721818AL5204) and it registers only 16.370 TB of the 18TB on my PowerEdge R340 Server with PERC 730p.  Has anyone had success in making PE R340 read their 18TB drive correctly?  Is there a firmware update to the controller that might do the trick? My firmware for PERC730P is 4.300.00-8366 and package version is 25.5.8.0001

Thank you!

Hi,

I don't think having the latest firmware would help the drive to be registered as the corrected size as written. It's the hardware limitation and also here are many factors that contribute to this discrepancy. You can refer to this page https://dell.to/3mPsAUX;

Have you tried on another server to check the size?

Actually, what you're seeing is due to the difference between decimal (1000 based) and binary (1024 based) terabyte.

As per drive's doc: "TB: 1,000,000,000,000 bytes"

A bit later (4.1) the capacity of that drive is stated as: 18,000,207,937,536 bytes

The above capacity expressed in binary TB is 16.3711 TB, which is essentially what you're seeing

So the controller is seeing the full capacity just fine, it's just that the OS shows disk capacity in binary based TB while the drive maker advertises decimal TB
