PE R510 w PERC H710 does not see physical disks to replace in Raid 1-0
Hi all, I am running RAID 1-0 on my server here and we had a disk fail. We replaced the disk but after clearing it and letting it spin up from scratch the disk will still not be seen in the Virtual Disk Page. This is the second drive we have purchased thinking that it may be a compatibility issue with the previous one. Can anyone shed some light on why this may be the case or some steps that I may have forgotten.

Done and Done. All I get is a generic alert. Nothing in the logs, nothing in event viewer

What is the make/model of the replacement disk(s)? What is the make/model of the existing array disks?

Check the PHYSICAL disk screen, make sure it is showing as Ready. If it is showing Foreign, you must first CLEAR the foreign configuration. If it is showing Ready, you need to assign it as a hot-spare.

Replacement Disk
Revision ES66
Existing Array
ST3600957SS
Revision ESF5
The only difference I can see is Manufacture date and Revision. Our vendor said that this was the only compatible disk available.

If this is a double post, sorry. I tried posting and it doesn't seem to show up.
Anyways, I have tried that and I am only getting a generic alert and a caution before that with no success.
After ignoring this and continuing anyways.

I get the warning after I select "add as hot spare"
My log is to big apparently. but the errors I am getting today in relation to the disk problem (trying to use pastbin but its messed up for me at the moment) -

On the surface, it appears that it should be fine. The firmware versions "could" be an issue. It is also possible that the two disks vary is size slightly - both in the 600GB classification, but if the new one is even 1KB smaller then it will not work.
When are you getting the caution? When attempting to add it as a hot-spare? Can you export the controller log and attach it here or make it available for review?

I would get the caution after I would select "enable as hot spare" in the drop down menu.

Can you post a picture of the Virtual Disks screen?
If you have two RAID 10's configured across the same disks, that could be an issue. If so, I would advise updating the controller firmware (iDRAC, BIOS, and drivers first), then attempting to add it. With multiple VD's across the same disks, you will have to use the GLOBAL HS option (you can't assign a DEDICATED HS when the disks are shared between multiple VD's).

Our configuration is as follows
- 8 Physical Disks (1 failed/replaced) Raid 1-0
- 2 Virtual Disks 00/01
- Virtual Disk 01 when trying to assign/Unassign Dedicated hot spare comes up with no results.
Actually error "Storage Management only displays those disks that can be used as a hot spare. There are currently no disks that are available, large enough, or of the correct type to be used as a hot spare for this virtual disk."
Yet everything in the physical disk area seems happy.

How many virtual disks do you have configured in the Virtual Disks screen? You may have multiple VD's created with different technologies (SAS/SATA/SSD/etc.) ... go to the Virtual Disks screen and try assigning a DEDICATED hot-spare for the VD that contains the like disks (as opposed to assigning a GLOBAL hot-spare on the Physical Disks screen).

Ok, good ... so you have two VD's, one for 4 disks and the other with 4 different disks.
Sorry for all the screenshots, but can you expand the information for disk 6 and 7 for comparison?

The only difference I see, which is not an insignificant difference, is the fact that the new disk is not Encryption Capable. Whether or not you use the encryption capabilities or not, the fact that one disk would not support it if it were ever enabled may be enough for the controller to consider that disk as an unsuitable replacement.
