PE SC1430 w/SAS5iR Raid 1 - with Ubuntu

Question

I have the following configuration:
Dell PowerEdge SC1430 with Dual core Xeon 5110, dual processors
1 GB 667Mhz (2x512) single ranked buffered DIMMS
Hard Drives: (2) 80GB SATA II, 7.2K rpm hard drives
Hard Drive Controller: SAS 5IR SAS Internal RAID adapter, PCI-Express
Hard Drive Configuration: Add-in SAS5iR (SATA/SAS Controller)
No operating system

I am trying to install Ubuntu 6.06 but I believe I must set up the RAID 1 hardware before doing the OS install. The Dell CD that came with the system allows me to set up the raid 1, but in order to do so, I have to select one of the paid OS's that Dell supports. That doesn't work because I don't have any of those OS's. How can I set up the disks as RAID 1 (mirrored SATA drives) and then go ahead and install Ubuntu 6.06 server?

Is there a reason you cannot go to the SAS controller on bootup just after the dell splash screen and configure the raid from within there?

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. The only reason I couldn't do that is because I didn't know about it. I now see the LSI Logic MPT Setup Utility shows that I have a single virtual disk set up; the two disks have already been set up as RAID 1, so I guess that was not the problem. However, when I boot from the Ubuntu server installation cd, it appears to hang after 'Detecting disks and all other hardware'. Blank blue screen...I waited about 30 minutes. Any idea of what to do next?

Your going to need drvers

Ubuntu is not listed as a supported OS, however you may be able to use the drivers from another version of linux, how to load controller drivers? that would be a question for someone that knows ubuntu better than myself.

Thanks. I found that it works great with the newer Ubuntu 6.10 64-bit version install. I assume the drivers were added to this version.

I am experiencing the same problem but instead of Ubuntu I was trying to install Windows 2000 Server. Is there any work around on that?
