PERC H800 6Gg SAS HBA for PE R510 520 or 710

Hi all,

I'd like some specific info about SCSI adapters and also one other general question.

I'm in the process of picking a new poweredge rack 2u server to replace a simple PE830 file server running Backup Exec.  I want to continue to use a SATA internal Quantum Ultrium LTO4 HH tape drive and an Enhance E8-ML JBOD miniSAS (SFF8470) Array 1E with it.  The JBOD array is two channel/port (i currently use one for 4HD's).  I can use the internal LTO4 drive if there is room to install it in one of the servers or use an external enclosure for it with a SCSI controller card to miniSAS (SFF 8088).

1. Does the rack version 710 (or 5 series) actually have an internal drive bay for a SATA Quantum Ultrium LTO4 HH drive?  If not;

2. Which SCSI card configuration is the best for the JBOD array and the tape drive w/ external enclosure?  If I want to continue to use one channel/port, can I use the PERC H800 H8A512 for both the jbod array and open manage software to configure it Raid 5..and...use the second channel/port for the tape drive or will they conflict somehow?

3.  If the H800 H8A512 does have two channels/ports and I decide to use them both for the JBOD array, can I use the 6Gb SAS HBA SAS6E also for the externally enclosed tape drive?  Will the bios/system/open manage software see the internal and 2 external controllers w/o conflicts etc?

tnx in advance....

Ksdst1,

With what you are trying to do it is not suggested to have the internal raid and an external device on the same controller.

You can go with the SAS6e, Perc 6e, or the H800 for the JBOD and LTO4 and a Perc 6i, Sas6ir, or an H700 for the internal raid.

With the question on the slots. The internal raid controllers are on an integrated spot. The external controllers would go in slot 1,3 or 4 (slot 1 is on center riser, 3 and 4 are on the left riser). You can have 2 external controllers, plus the internal controller max though.

Tnx for the response but I think I was not clear with my question.  I can put the tape drive in an external enclosure so it will be an external device as is the JBOD Drive assembly.

So with that said,  can I use the PERC H800 H8A512 for both the jbod array and open manage software to configure it Raid 5..and...use the second channel/port for the tape drive or will they conflict somehow?

If I decide to use both ports for the JBOD array, can I use the 6Gb SAS HBA SAS6E also for the externally enclosed tape drive?  Will the bios/system/open manage software see the internal and 2 external controllers w/o conflicts etc?

tnx in advance....
