PowerEdge 415 changing from s300 to h700
I see that this question has been asked before but i dont see a situation like mine yet.
I have an r415 blade server that was manufactured around 2012. The ard drives all connect to one single cable on the pci riser board.
I have an h700i that i have installed into the upper pci expansion slot
Do i need to use the 2 sas ports on the card or can i just use the existing cable that is connectedand leave the sas ports on the card empty?
Here is a pic of what i am talking about.

Hello
You need to use the connectors on the card. The connector on the riser is only used for modular cards installed into the integrated storage slot.
Thanks

There isnt a backplane on this server so is it still possible to use this card?

Ok. So all of my hard drives are wired into one sas cable. Im assuming i will need 2 new cables to connect all 4 hard drives to the 2 connections on the card.
Also the connections on the h700 are different than what the hard drives are currently connected to.
What is the part number for the cable that connects directly to the hard drives. It looks like power may be supplied by the current fan type cable that is connected to the riser.

Yes, the two cable part numbers I have listed are X394K and 8FF8M. Either of those cables will work, and there may be other cable part numbers that will work as well. Every time we change anything with a part, including packaging or labeling, we will give it a new part number.
The cables are only available from our sales department when purchased as a kit with the controller. You can call our spare parts department to see if the cables are available for purchase, but we prioritize warranty stock over sales in spare parts. If we do not have a surplus of the cables we will not sell them. With older parts like this we will often not have them available for sale. You may be able to locate them from other vendors.
Thanks

It is likely the same cable.
The connector you are talking about is a piece of plastic that is placed into the connector to keep it from being damaged. You need to pull that piece of plastic out of the connector to be able to plug a cable into the H700.
Thanks

X394k looks exactly like the fan type cable that I already have. It is plugged in to the pci riser for the s300 modular card.
Would I be able to just take this existing cable and plug it in to either the sas A or sas B port on the h700?
I know the answer seems obvious but the reason I ask is because those ports on the card have 2 small holes in the middle of them and not one small flat fiber blade in the middle of the connector like mini sas. It looks similar to a 2 conductor electrical outlet but miniature.
Unless I am a total idiot and this is an insert in the port that needs to be removed before installation.
The card came refurbished from dell.

I looked again today to try and connect it. The breakout cable that I have is too short. The Dell part number on it is cn-0m 800G-48570-24H-0290-A00.
Is the x394k Longer?

Sorry for the long drawn out part number.
The current cable I have is the M800G which is about 8 inches too short.
Is the X394k Longer?

The main difference between our cables is length. We design our systems so that there is not excess cabling or materials in the chassis that will disrupt air flow/heat dissipation. The cable part I provided is the one we install at the factory for the listed configuration. It should be long enough.
Thanks

I have installed an H700 in the upper pci slot on my R415. All drives are direct connect via breakout cable directly to the H700.
I have visited the support site for my device on dell and the latest driver will not install. It gives me a "system not compatible error.
I have tried stepping up one version at a time but that will not work either.
I have the VD's configured and windows server 2012 r2 installed and updated.
I have tried using a repository image booted from a usb and there are still several drivers and firmware out of date. IDRAC and lifecycle updates fail, BMC was successful as well as some OMSA
I have tried using the SSU and some updates applied but several failed.
Please help me get this H700 firmware up to date.

I installed part number 0R374M.
Is that correct and if not then what is the correct part number?

No, that is the integrated version of the H700. It is designed to function in an integrated storage slot. It is not compatible with the modular storage slot in the R415 and will not work in a normal PCIe slot.
There are many part numbers for an H700 adapter, here is one: J9MR2
When searching for an H700 look for something referring to adapter or integrated in the description. The "i" at the end of the H700 stands for internal and does not really mean anything as there is not an external version of the H700, so the "i" is often excluded from the description of the H700.
Thanks

I am assuming that your statement about the system not compatible error was when trying to update the firmware and not the driver.
There is more than one version of the H700. The version installed in that slot should be the H700 Adapter. The firmware is different between the different variations of the H700, so you need to be sure you are installing the H700 Adapter firmware. If you installed anything other than the H700 adapter into that slot it will not work.
Thanks

ok so before I order anything else.
They J9MR2 IS the correct card and WILL install into the upper adapter slot on the pci riser for my R415 correct?
will K883J / W56W0 / 1THG8 work as well?
Nothing will be installed into the lower slot where the old s300 was correct?
