PowerEdge 840 PERC 5\ir SAS Contoller firmware issue
Need help when installing firmware using freedos for Dell UCS-51 PERC 5\ir SAS Controller. I downloaded the most up-to-date firmware from Dell’s website and when I go to install using free DOS with sasflash utility I get a message stating invalid signature. How can I get pass this road block? I cannot get into windows To do it that way so I’m left only with the option of freedos. The system is a power edge 840 tower server. I know, very old system but still want to fix this issue If possible without having to buy a new RAID Card.

*you may even redownload in case first one was corrupted
**Execute the file to extract and put extracted files on free DOS utility.
*try the controller in a different slot if issue continues

Hey there,
Thanks for replying back. So I downloaded the package that you suggested. Now when in Dos and executing \SAS5IRA.bat I receive the following:
Initializing Adapter..
PCI Parity Error interupt at 0070: 0528.
Type (S)hut off NMI, (R)eboot, other key to continue
What does this mean and what should I do to fix this PCI Error?
By the way, I believe I did download the wrong Firmware so I feel we are def. on the right track.....

Hello Jmerz,
Thank you for the update. What is the history of this server? Was it working and just failed?
Was anything recently done before this started? Any hardware added/ removed?
If the PCI Parity Error is on the controller it could be the controller or the slot.
Can you try it in a different slot?

Yes, the server was working and just failed. I purchased a replacement card from ebay, but of coarse I receive an issue with the card that I purchased. The original reason why we replaced the card was because we were receiving an error halt message for slot 1. When replacing the card, we don't receive the halt error for slot 1 anymore but the following:
Unable to load LSI Logic Corp. MPT BIOS
MPT BIOS Fault 08h encountered at adapter PCI (02h, 08h, 00h)
Press any key to continue......
So after doing some research I believe there is an issue with the firmware / BIOS on the replacement card. That is the situation in a nutshell. So I should try another slot even though the slot 2, 3, 4 are different size? I do know that they can still fit but might be an issue with performance.

Thank you, I see. You won't be able to try a different slot.
The issue could be the slot if multiple controllers have problem in the slot.
However I have PCI Parity Error interrupt on SAS 5/ir that have bulging capacitors.
Can you examine the controller closely for any blown capacitors?

After examination of the SAS Card, I do see a slight bulge at the top of one capacitor. I did here that there was some bad capacitors going around during 2000 thru 2010 that affected alot of circuit boards. I will try to replace this capacitor. Have nothing to lose at this point. Thanks for your time.
