PowerEdge R510 memory upgrade

I'm looking to do some memory upgrades on my R510 and need some clarification on some statements in the docs.

It says for single or dual ranked DIMMs, 1 module per channel supports 1333, 2 per channel supports 1067.  I assume this refers only to channel 0 which can be two modules?  Just making sure I'm not misunderstanding something.  So if you had 1333 modules in 1,2 and 3 you'd still be at 1333, but as soon as you put a second module on channel 0 your entire memory configuration is going to run at 1067?  What if you were to have 1067 quad ranked in channel 1 and 2 and (2) 1067 dual ranked modules in channel 0, would you still be at 1067 or would the quad ranks  put you down to 800?

This statement also confuses me - "memory modules of different sizes can be mixed but all populated channels must have identical configurations".  It would not make sense for this to mean that populated channels on a given processor have to have the same config, so I assume they mean that corresponding channels between each processor have to be the same?  So as long as they were all registered DIMMS, you could have 4, 8 and 16GB DIMMs in bank A, and as long as it mirrored what is in bank B you'd be OK?

Thanks so much for any clarification.

Hopefully, I can assist you with your memory questions on the R510

There are 8 memory slots, 4 per CPU.  Each side has 3 channels; 0,1,2
Channel 0 will be A4,A1; Channel 1, A2, Channel 2, A3  Same for second CPU and slots.

The Dell™ PowerEdge R510 (2S 2U) system utilizes DDR3 memory providing a high-performance, high-speed memory interface capable of low latency response and high throughput. The R510 supports Registered ECC DDR3 DIMMs (RDIMM) or Unbuffered ECC DDR3 DIMMs (UDIMM). The system contains eight memory sockets split into two sets of four sockets, one set for each processor. Each four-socket set is organized into three channels per processor. Supported memory modules are 1GB/2GB/4GB/8GB/16GB DDR3 1066MHz and 1333MHz DIMMs with either single rank, dual rank, or quad rank.

Restrictions
If there is one quad-rank 1066 MHz RDIMM with any other RDIMM in channel-0, then the speed will downgrade to 800 MHz.
BIOS will default to DDR3-1066 speed when two DDR3-1333 capable DIMMs (UDIMMs or RDIMMs) are detected in channel-0 for Nehalem-EP CPU only, not for Westmere CPU.

Memory Slots
DIMM population must follow a defined order (Single DIMM only in slots A1 and B1) – Skipping channels or populating the slot closest to the processor first is not allowed.
UDIMMs mixed with RDIMMs are not supported – System will halt during early POST if this is the case.
Non-ECC and ECC DIMMs should not be mixed – The system will boot with a POST warning message if this is the case.
Sparing mode selected, but lacking three channels with DIMMs installed – Disable sparing, and use two channels.
Symmetric DIMM size in CPU1 and CPU2
Invalid configuration, such as two channels populated (Ch1+Ch2 or Ch0+Ch2) – The system will display a POST warning message.

Hi Geoff,

Sorry for hi-jacking this post but I'm having the same issues too.

I'm installing 2x Hynix 8GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz ECC Registered CL9 240-Pin DIMM Dual Rank Memory Module Mfr P/N HMT31GR7BFR4C-H9D7 on A1 and A2 but the BIOS only show 800MHz

Originally with stock 2x Hynix 2GB PC3-8500 HMT125U7BFR8C-G7T0 on A1 and A2 show 800MHz

BIOS version upgrade to 1.12

Any suggestion what when wrong?

Thank you

Geoff Tr.

What memory mode are you in?  If its set to optimizer, change to Advanced ECC and then check the bios to see what it shows and advise if it stays the same.

Hi Geoff,

It's already in Advanced ECC mode.

In the F2 bios, go to the Power performance tab.

Determines the power management settings for the system. Options are:

Memory Power and Performance Management

  • Maximum Performance
  • 1333 Mhz
  • 1067 Mhz
  • 800 Mhz
  • Minimum Power
  • You can only change this field if the Power performance is set to Custom.

would it be possible that because E5504 CPU only support 800MHz, the system automatically select 800MHz for the setting?
