PowerEdge T310 - PERC H200 RAID1

Hi all,

Bit of a newbie when it comes to RAID configurations in servers and wanted to ask a question.
We have a server with a Perc H200 raid controller and 2x250GB SATA HDD which has the OS and 2x500GB SATA HDD for data/file sharing, both configured in Raid 1
to give redundancy. My question is, we want to replace the 2x500GB HDD with 2x2TB drives.
Will I be able to replace the first 500GB drive with the larger one, rebuild then replace the second drive. Will the new 2TB HDD still show as 500GB and if so, what can I do to increase the capacity.

Thanks

Charles

If you replace each disk and wait for it to rebuild, your array will still be 500GB, and there is no way to utilize the extra space.  You will need to backup your 500GB RAID 1, remove the disks, insert larger disks, configure RAID 1, restore data.

Just wanted to throw this out there:  If you had the PERC H700 controller, which has much more functionality, you would be able to either 1) expand the array to fill the space of the disks, or 2) utilize the extra space to create a second array across the disks.  My two cents:  Never skimp on the controller :)
