R620 with 4 drive backplane & no PERC - SAS/SATA

Hello, we currently have a number of R620 servers that came with no PERC card.  They have the 4 drive backplane and a connection going from the backplane to the MB (cable is 0PD91Y).  We have used SATA drives and they are working fine.

Could anyone conform if we need to change the cable to have SAS drives work? And do we need the PERC (example H710) even if we do not wish to use RAID?

Thank you.

On the R620 motherboard, you will have 2 mini sas connectors. One is for the S110 onboard PERC and the other bigger connector is for the Mini dedicated RAID controller. So assuming you don't have a hardware PERC installed, the backplane is connected to the S110 controller. The limitation of S110 is that it's a SATA only controller. You will need to get a dedicated PERC to support SAS drives. You will also need a cable which connects the backplane to the RAID controller mini SAS connector since the connector for S110 is different and won't connect to the dedicated PERC mini SAS connector.

So, If you want SATA drives with no RAID, just stick with the S110. If you want SAS support, then you will have to buy a dedicated PERC either mini or PCI and a compatible cable. H310 is the entry level controller which supports JBOD. H710 and H710P on the other hand have battery backed write cache which are useful for larger RAID setups, but don't support JBOD (You will have to create RAID-0 VDs).

If you don't want RAID, then just turn it off in the BIOS. Connected to the MB, you would have the option to enable/disable the S100 controller. Do NOT use this. OS-managed RAID is preferable to the S100. The H710 is a high-performance RAID controller and does not do non-RAID.Whether or not you install a higher-end PERC depends on your goals - what are you trying to do?
