R720: disk replace
I have to replace a failed disk in a R720
The failed disk is a 3.5'' SAS 15K 600GB
Two questions:
1. Can i have the replacement part number (european, if different from US)
2. As this kind of disks are EOL , would be possible to use the 2.5'' version from the R730? I'm not sure if the block number is exactly the same on both versions to be used safely in a RAID configuration
Any other solution? I have a bounch of Rx20 with those kind of disks and i want to be ready when failures happens.

Hello.
US P/N: W348K could be available at other third party vendors 400-AJRF
When using 3.5" x8 HD backplane on the R720, use 2.5" with 3.5" carrirer P/N KG1CH. You will have to check the compatibility of the 2.5" HD with R720 server
You may consider upgrading to higher capacity and available hard drives. This will depend on your data needs and budget

How can i check for compatibility?
Obviously disks from R730 are not wrote on specs for R720 but this should not be an issue, newer disks (12gbps) are backward compatible to 6gbps (this is from SAS specs)
What i dont know is if newer disks as at least the same block number as previous one, otherwise raid controller doesnt accept it for replacement due to different size
How can i check for this?
Anyway, is this: 400-AJRF the official replacement for my current 3,5'' sas 15k 6gbps that i have in my r720?

What is the P/N?
Block numbers may not matter as long as they are Dell certified and compatible with the server.
Yes, but it is 2.5" in a 3.5" carrier.

I dont have the part number but if the right replacement for an R720 3.5'' is 400-AJRF you answered my question: i can safely mix a 3.5'' disk with it's 2.5'' counterpart like 400-AJRF

just to clarify. The R720 SAS 600G 15K part number should be 400-20613.
Can I replace this part number with a 2.5'' SAS 600GB 15K 400-AJRF in the same array ?
One is 3.5, the other is 2.5. Usually there isn't any issue, but I'm unsure about the exact sector number and if sector number differs, the raid will refuse the replacement.
In other word: which is the right replacement, now, in 2017, for a 400-20613 ? 3.5 SAS 15K are almost end-of-life from 1 year.
