R740 Drive bay upgrade
A big hello to this amazing community. This is my first post.
I have a Dell R740 Server (2018 model).
This server came installed with an 8 drive SAS front bay (SFF). Can I add an additional cages and controller to increase the number of SAS SSD's from 8 to 24?
What are the part nos for the upgrade - cage/bay, cable, controller?

No, you cant change the drive bay configuration. Each drive bay configuration is a different physical chassis, which requires a specific backplane. The drive bays are riveted/welded into place and arent removable. This is true for all PowerEdge servers.

Hello Mandeep.sjs,
Thank you for choosing Dell.
I've checked documentation and would like to share with you possible front hard-drive configurations for PowerEdge R740:
8 x 2.5 -inch hard drive configuration
16 x 2.5 -inch hard drive configuration
8 x 3.5 -inch hard drive configuration

Please ask me if you have any questions.
Thank you

This is surprising but true!
Response from Dell support:
"server can maximum take up to 8 HDD only. You cannot install more than that. If storage space is a concern then you need to install higher capacity drivers in available 8 slots."

Hi @Mandeep.sjs,
Yes, unfortunately to upgrade the server's slot to higher amount, needs various hardware changes and it is almost impossible.

Hi @Omoakin,
Do you happen to know what backplane do you use in your server? Would it be a 16 drive or 8 drive backplane? If you're using a 16 drive backplane, then you need to check what is the drive specification that you use and locate the correct same drive specification here: https://dell.to/3N0Gz6I. Alternative, it's preferable to contact sales support to confirm the availability of drives.
If you're using a 8 drive backplane, as I check in the user guide, there is no expansion or method to add another 8 drive backplane next to the existing one. https://dell.to/3lKHn3w
