SAS to U320 SCSI adapter ... possible to use SAS disks in std U320 SCSI???

Hi all,

Noobie question ... hopefully someone can help.

I have a pe2850 and have access to some SAS U320 disks.  I have the perc 4e/i controller which has the 80-pin SCSI.

Is it possible to get an adapter to something to enable me to use the SAS disk in a standard U320 SCSI controller?

Thanks in advance.

Don't think that is possible.

There is no such thing as SAS U320 disks.

I've never heard of converters, but even if they do exist, it wouldn't be a Dell supported solution, and your chance at success would probably be pretty slim.

I'd suggest to just buy some U320 SCSI disks and use those in the server.

What cheap options are available to externally house them from the pe2850?

SAS is pretty new, I don't think anything will really be cheap, pending your definition of cheap.

You would need two things, an SAS controller with external connections, like the SAS 5/E (or PERC 5/E if you wanted RAID abilities) and then an enclosure to put them in like the MD1000 or 3000.

SATA HDDs will fit into SAS drivebays, but the reverse is not true - if you have a SAS HDD and a SATA controller, it physically won't fit...

If you want SATA drives in a server, instead of spending the money on an external solution, a cheaper option may just be to buy a Poweredge 2950, which has support for SATA drives. You can get this system with a PERC5i card if you want raid capabilities, or with a SAS card option, which allows for 'plain' drive setups.
