T105 - Alert: Hard disk fan not detected when using SAS 6iR controller
I recently fitted a Dell SAS 6iR raid controller to my new PowerEdge T105.
It now comes up with a message "Alert: Hard disk fan not detected" after the BIOS and POST during boot.
If I remove the SAS card and reboot, message disappears. Put the card back in and it reappears. I've updatade BIOS on motherboard and SAS is already as latest level.
Anyone ideas?
Everything else works fine, if I press F1 to ingore message it boots into Windows server no problem.

Dennis - I am still trying to resolve this, so far unsuccessfully with Dell.
I have the SAS 6iR card, but it did not come with a SAS/SATA fanout cable or disk fan. I originally ordered the following upgrade for my T105 server from Dell website:
403-10263 SAS 6iR Internal Controller RAID PCIe – Kit
What I received was a box with PN: XN847 on it (that was a card only, not a 'kit').
Will asking Customer Services for the above FY606 resolve my issues or is that only a fan? What does this service kit PN: FY606 contain?
Your assistance would be most appreciated.

Dennis, thanks. Bu what about the fanout cable, to connect from SAS controller to SATA drives, do we know if that is included?

The fan actually connects to the MB, I do not think this kit includes any cables to connect the controller to the drives.

pcrequest, are you using a T105 and if so does the fan fit straight in or does it need some kind of bracke t assy?
I still havent got this sorted with Dell UK which is very disappointing. I've been passed around so many times, customer services, tech support, complaints, account manager, and 7 weeks later still not resolved!
I would post the SAS-SATA fanout cable PN once I know or hopefully Dennis can advise.

This is what is labled on my cable that I got out of another Dell. I was able to test this cable on this RAID card on both SAS and SATA drives.
By the way, this setup runs VMware's ESXi 3.5 U2 which is how I'm using my T105. The IDE driver fails during boot up (if no RAID card is installed), however the driver that gets installed, works on the RAID card we've been referencing. Seems like a great cheap setup for a lab server. Only thing is the onboard NIC performs sub 10 Mb speed. I installed an inexpensive PCI Intel Pro 1000 card and that is much faster.

PCRequest, many thanks for the info on this.
I purchased the card this week and was expecting the cables to be easily sourced.. ie. from Dell. Unfortunately I had to go to a third party, by which time I now realised from reading this forum that I needed the fan kit as well! as it does indeed trigger a warning on post. The fact if did not actually state any of this in any of the documentation I could find on the Dell site on purchasing, plus the fact that actually identifying and sourcing the parts is even more of a nightmare - have had to rely on the forum. This has now nearly doubled the cost of this small upgrade project.
When it is all finally connected I am sure all will be great, but it must be said that the way Dell are now handling the availability of upgrades/parts for new kit they are selling is extremely disappointing and frustrating for customers. I will seriously look into alternative options in future.
Thanks again for the part numbers.

I too have just gone through the same process, very annoying that none of this is in the sales literature!
I recently bought a PowerEdge T-100. I also separately purchased the 6/IR SAS/SATA controller along with two 500GB SATA disks. For the benefit of those in the UK, you will need the following:-
Both of these items can be purchased from Dell for around £40, part number 400-14766:-
http://search.dell.co.uk/1/2/967-dell-hdd-fan-cable-kit.html
Although not clearly stated on the Dell product site, the kit **includes** the HDD fan, a SAS to 4 x SATA cable and the HDD activity cable (that goes between the SAS controller and the motherboard. The SAS to 4 x SATA cable also has right angle connectors, so the case clearance issue described above is not an issue.
I also recommend viewing the discussion on this experts-exchange thread:-

I hope this helps!

I don't know if it will help you, BUT we had a PowerEdge 1430 that was working fine. We removed the drives from the onboard controller, and added a Perc 5i. We put 2 new TB drives in. All of a sudden, we had a hard drive error (but it continued to boot) but the case fans were spinning much faster than normal, but not full speed. We were told to make sure our Hard Drive fan was hooked up, but our machine didn't come with it. So, we were going to order one just to stop the issue, but one of the Dell techs sent me this, said this should fix it. We tried it, and it worked fine. Apparently it is a kind of HIDDEN reset. It can't hurt to try, so here is what was emailed to me from Dell support.
Clear the fan error by entering the PowerEdge SC1430 BIOS.
To clear the error, Alert! Fan HDD Was Not Detected, perform the following steps:
Turn on or restart the system.
Press the key immediately after you see the following message display briefly on the screen:
= System Setup
The System Setup screen appears.
Press the key until Integrated Devices is highlighted, and then press the key.
The Integrated Devices screen appears.
Press the key until Optional Hard-Disk Drive Fan is highlighted.
Press + keys at the same time.
The fan error resets.
Press the key, and then press the key to save your changes and exit.
The system reboots

For future reference - after a call with Enterprise Support today, it turned out that part number FY606 is an internal part number and cannot be ordered the usual way. We spent hours searching the web for this item. The correct part number is, as per thebaronn, 400-14766. You won't find this article anywhere on the Dell website, but you'll have to give Dell support a call and order it through them. It comes at € 35.00 excl. VAT.

Hi Vicdelfant. Do you have a contact person or number, as I have tried contacting the support team and referencing this article and am still having trouble sourcing the part?
Kind Regards
