Windows 2012, Poweredge 530 SLOW PERC H730 Performance

We have a recently purchased Dell Poweredge R530,  32GB RAM, Dual Xeon E52620V3 CPU's.

We are experiencing horrible disk performance,  running dskspd.exe, we are seeing individual drives performing as low as 1.3MB/s on reads, and the highest test we ran showed just a bit over 3.0MB/s on reads.

Write speeds are even worse.

I've updated firmware on the PERC H730 and updated to the latest windows driver, and it's still very slow.

Configuration is as follows:

2 1TB SATA drives -  Setup RAID 1 with two virtual drives for the OS drive

4 4TB SATA Drives - Setup RAID 5 - 1 virtual drive  for MSSQL 

OS is Windows Server 2012R2 with all the latest updates - Server is in production so I can't do any destructive testing.

What is the make/model of the drives? Did they come installed in the system from Dell?

All drives were purchased with the system - I don't know the exact model of the 1TB drives, but the 4TB are HUS726040ALA610  I believe - I pulled the hot spare on the RAID 5 to look at the model - I did not want to disturb the RAID 1 set.

The Cache is enabled through the PERC configuration - it's set to Write Back and Read Ahead.

It appears the program disables write back, without WB your disk array will have dismal performance .

I decided to run this again without the -h option, which doesn't omit hardware cache, and I'm running into similar results.   In studying this a little more (this problem was passed onto me from a vendor), I notice these results are only on our RAID 1 volumes (Drives C and I)

 

On our RAID 5 volume (drive D), performance is much faster.   Here are the results from those two tests:

With raid 1, writes are not great if the array is  moderate to heavily used as the cache is flooded, which causes writes to act as if there is little or no cache, Writes are written to one member of the array, completed, then written to the other member, causing considerable delays. As to reads,  they are processed by one of the member disks, so there no great performance under a moderate to heavy load, Lightly load the raid cache helps with most of the delays.

Now raid 5 has more delays on writes due to the added burden of parity creation. On your testing you have a 25/75 ratio which is good. Raid 5 has a much higher read speed as it reads from multiple disk at once. Technically raid 5 is much better in this scenario. There are ways to setup multiple raid 1 arrays for databases which have a much higher performance, but it costs. Again, lightly load the raid cache, takes care of delays.

Now for more performance, a raid 10 would be a good choice, as the reads are from multiple member drives and the array adapter is less taxed then with raid 5..

Lastly, take benchmarks, especially the results from 1 program with a bit of healthy skepticism.  Not only does the raid adapter parameter need adjusting for each type of raid, the operating system needs to be tweaked before benchmarking or going live.

You need to  use multiple benchmark programs and  a live situation using real data for proper performance evaluation.

I using Foxfire, v57 ,the reCAPTCHA  asks for a ridiculous number of verifies. Is the idea to torture forum users, if so your right on the mark. Had to switch to MS Internet Explorer to get past the robot  nonsense.
