About a month ago I updated my client's R730xd, I hadn't updated BIOS, IDRAC etc in quite a long time. After that my client started complaining about excessive noise coming from the server room. The fans were running around 10.5k RPM, which is excessive. I talked to the local Dell support and they suggested disabling C1 states in BIOS. It had a very minor effect, now the fans are around 9.8k RPM.
I have tried disabling the aggressive cooling policy for third party installed PCIe devices via ipmi over LAN, but it had no effect. I don't think there are any third-party PCIe devices, but there are a couple of non-certified SSDs.
The fan speed you listed is within operational allowances, so there may not be any options. However, you might try restarting the iDRAC with racadm racreset -h. The iDRAC functions as a fan controller so restarting it may help. If that fails, you can try performing a power drain by shutting the server off, unplugging it, and holding the power button down for about 30 seconds. If the fan keeps running at a high RPM, the firmware may be doing it deliberately. I did find a link when searching the forum that might help you with some IPMI commands. You can compare what you have with what they used. I can't recommend this though, as it may lead to insufficient cooling and problems arising from that. I don't think you can set maximum cooling speeds, but you may check in the location listed in the owner's manual for thermal control options: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/poweredge-r730xd/r730xd_ompublication/changing-the-thermal-settings?guid=guid-6aa43bf5-38bb-49c3-9f28-adba64d3ac88&lang=en-us
I have two PowerEdge R730xd and I have a problem with the first one for the ventilation (always run at 87%). The two servers have the same version of firmware and the same revision of the system.
- I restarted the iDRAC with racadm racreset -h and I tried the unplug power with the hold power button. - I changed the thermal profile in the iDRAC but I still have the problem.
Hi, to see why your fan is running so fast we would have to compare your system to another one for number of cards plugged to the riser slots (or the type of cards) and how BIOS settings are different, too.

Understanding why the two system's are cooling differently really isn't something we can get into, because it is firmware controlled and influenced by numerous internal and external factors. The best recommendation we can make is to make sure your firmware and OS are up to date. Considering the concern is cooling, I would review all firmware in the system, not just the BIOS.
Not without removing the non validated SSDs. It is possible that is what is causing the higher fan speeds and there is not a validated method for changing it.
I did the IPMI trick but the fans only drop to a normal speed for about 2 seconds, then ramp back up again to 46%. The 730xd does not work correctly with non-Dell drives. I think that is absolutely terrible of Dell to pull this kind of stunt.
