Single Rank DIMMs PowerEdge 2850
I have several PE2850s with 4GB of RAM each, in 2 2GB DIMMs. I want to upgrade them all to 16MB, so I bought 2 more 2GB and 2 4GB DIMMs for each. Bought them from Dell. Tried to install them last night and got nowhere.
First, tried to put the 4GB pairs in DIMM1_A and DIMM1_B, then 2GB pairs in DIMM2A&B and DIMM3A&B, and got this BIOS message:
-----
RV100-M BIOS
Error: Incorrect memory configuration
Memory slots DIMM3_A and DIMM3_B only support single rank DIMMs. Remove the dual rank DIMMs from slots DIMM3_A and DIMM3_B.
For more information on valid memory configurations, please see the system documentation on support.dell.com
System halted!
-----
Then, put the 4GB pairs in DIMM3, and 2GB pairs in DIMM1 and DIMM2, and got the same message.
I realize that maybe I should have tried the 4GB pairs in DIMM2 just to be thorough, but I gave up and went home at that point. Anyone seen this? Any chance it's a BIOS issue? Could Dell have really sold me the wrong DIMMs?

bhamill,
This system only supports 4 dual ranked Dimms - and if you do put 4 of these dimms into slots 1A/B and 2A/B then you cannot populate slots 3A/B.
Slots 3A/B will not accept dual rank dimms.
You can have 2 dual ranked dimms and 4 single rank dimms.
