Installing Windows 2012 R2 drivers for R610 and R420

Hello,

I've been given an R610 and an R420 server to create some lab scenarios. The plan is to install Windows Server 2012 R2 and run Hyper-V on both, and both during the 2012 install indicate that a MEDIA driver is needed.

Not being familiar with the Dell PowerEdge R610 or R420 manner of installing the driver updates, I've got the following two questions. Note that I have the service tag number, and have downloaded the drivers.

  1. From the whole list of drivers, what is considered the media driver? Is it the RAID controller, SAS, etc.?
  2. Must the drivers be extracted first from the single EXE that is downloaded, or will Server 2012 R2 take that EXE and do the extraction/magic? I would think not.

Which RAID controllers are you using?

If not using the S100/S110, then make sure that onboard SATA has RAID disabled.  Server 2012 R2 will not work with the R610's onboard S100.  If you have the S1x0 set to RAID, that is the driver it needs, as the optical drive is connected to that controller.  Best to set it to ATA.
