BIOS and Raid is up to date i believe ESM also-

Installing from 2008 media itself- Dell Build stalls.

No other OS present- array recreated.

Carlos,

To start, 2008 isn't a supported OS on the 2650, but have seen it installed.

That being said is the 2650 fully up to date on BIOS, ESM, and Raid?

How are you trying to install the OS? With the 2008 media itself, with the Dell Build and Update Utility, or another startup disk?

Also, when you started the install was there a previous OS present? If so, then you may want to delete and recreate the array and install fresh.

I have not had any problems installing 2008 on 2650's.  Have you tried different media, DVD burn, and/or download?

Have you given the array time enough to finish "initializing"?  Try configuring RAID, then waiting a couple hours before starting to install.

31% during which phase ... Expanding Files?

If you have another server, you might try swapping the optical drive.

Chris ... how do you figure it's not supported?!?

Did you use SBUU or SMTD?  What version number?

Flash, it is listed in the 2650 manual as not a supported OS.

After double-checking, 2008 does not have OpenManage support for the 2650, meaning the install utilities won't work.  The latest supported version of SBUU/SMTD for the 2650 is 5.5.  I believe you need a minimum of 6.1 (or so) for 2008.

So, installing from the OS DVD is your only option (other than a network install).  Some things to try when it doesn't "just install":

  • Try configuring RAID, then waiting a couple hours before starting to install.
  • If you have another server, you might try swapping the optical drive.
  • Check your media.  Try different media, try burning the DVD again at slower speeds or using different software or a different drive, and/or download the ISO again, maybe using a utility to ensure the integrity of the download.

It is listed as not supported, or it is not listed as supported?  There's a big difference, and you know as well as I do that Dell doesn't update their docs (pet peeve ... I know they must have an unmanageable amount of documentation, but ... many docs are completely useless as they are so out-of-date).  They don't even have 2003 listed :)

I tried this yesterday, PE2650, OM 5.5 disc, windows 2008 Sp1 Enterprise x86. It installed fine, but it took a LONG time, it appeared to be hung many times, but it kept going and when I came in this morning, the installtion was complete. There are 5 bangs in Device Manager, 2 ethernet and 3 pci devices. I'm pretty sure the pci devices are the drac. I'll complete the driver installation here in a bit

I didn't read down the pages ... 5.3 added support for 2008 before the OS was officially released, so 5.5 would/should work.  I could have sworn it was the same time as the jump to 6.0.  (I rarely use SBUU/SMTD for 2008+ installs - too much work :)).  6.2 added support for 2008 R2.

Also, according to 5.3, PERC firmware 2.8.1.7692 is required for the 2008 drivers.  (On 2850's I've been able to install 2008 and 2008 R2 on "unsupported" firmware versions, there are times though that it causes issues or won't install.)
