PowerEdge 1600SC Processor Questions

PowerEdge 1600SC Processor Questions

1.      What processors does my system support?

2.      Why do I see two processors in my operating system when only one is installed?

3.      Spare Parts and Upgrades

1.       What processors does my system support?

The PowerEdge 1600SC will support the Intel Dual Processor (DP) XEON Processors at speeds up to 3.2GHz, depending on the motherboard installed.

The PowerEdge 1600SC server series shipped with motherboards that supported a 400MHz Front Side Bus (FSB), Later in the production cycle of the PowerEdge 1600SC, a new motherboard design was offered, which accommodates a 533MHz FSB.

To determine which FSB speed and processors the system will accommodate, enter System Setup during the boot-up process by pressing the F2 function key as prompted. Look for the CPU Information section.

More information on viewing this information in System Setup can be found here:

2.       Why do I see two processors in my operating system when only one is installed?

The PowerEdge 1600SC system supports a technology known as hyper-threading. Hyper-threading allows one processor to act as two logical processors by providing two different data paths on the same chipset. Thus, with one physical processor in the system, the OS sees two logical processors.

For more information on hyper-threading technology from the Intel website, please click this link:

FYI for licensing issues with hyper-threading technology, read this document from Microsoft:

Please see the following Dell Knowledge Base article below for a full explanation of Hyper-threading:

3.       Spare Parts and Upgrades

Below are Dell Customer Kit and / or Spare Part numbers for the processors we currently offer for both PowerEdge 1600SC models.

The 400MHz FSB systems are not upgradeable to 533MHz FSB, however the 533MHz FSB motherboard is backward compatible to the 400MHz FSB processors.

400MHz Front-Side Bus only

311-2373       2.0GHz XEON processor with 512KB Cache
311-2374       2.4GHz XEON processor with 512KB Cache
311-2375       2.8GHz XEON processor with 512KB Cache

533MHz Front-Side Bus only

311-2458       2.0GHz XEON processor with 512KB Cache
311-2459       2.4GHz XEON processor with 512KB Cache
311-2460       2.8GHz XEON processor with 512KB Cache

All 7-digit parts SKU's (Customer Kits) listed above are sold as new items from Dell.
All PowerEdge 1600SC Processor Customer Kits include the processor, heatsink and heatsink clips along with installation instructions.

We also have processors available from our Refurbished parts stockrooms. Parts in these stockrooms are labeled as refurbished but are, in fact, either reconditioned parts or, in the majority of cases, new parts that have been transferred to our stockrooms for use by Dell Server Technical support. Below are the 5-digit part numbers of these processor service kits we offer:
