PowerEdge 400SC Processor Questions

PowerEdge 400SC Processor Questions

1.       What processors does my system support?

2.       Why do I see two processors in my operating system when only one is installed?

3.       Spare Parts and Upgrades

1.       What processors does my system support?

The PowerEdge 400SC supports a single processor and been tested, validated and manufactured in these configurations:

Intel Celeron Processor at speeds of 2.0 and 2.4Ghz, 400MHz Front Side Bus (FSB), 128KB cache
Intel Pentium 4 (Northwood) Processor at the speed of 2.26Ghz, 533MHz FSB, 512KB cache
Intel Pentium 4 (Northwood) Processor at speeds of 2.0Ghz, 2.4Ghz, 2.8GHz and 3.4GHz, 800MHz FSB, 512KB cache
Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott) Processor at the speed of 3.4Ghz, 800MHz FSB, 512KB and 1Mb cache.

These processors fit into the Intel "Socket N", 478 pin, ZIFF processor socket.

2.       Why do I see two processors in my operating system when only one is installed?

The PowerEdge 400SC Northwood (3.06 and above) and all Prescott processors supports a technology known as Hyper-Threading. Hyper-threading allows one processor to act as two logical processors by providing two different data paths on the same chipset. Thus, with one physical processor in the system, the OS sees two logical processors.
Note: Hyper-Threading is only beneficial when using software optimized for Hyper-Threading, otherwise it can actually slow down a system.
For more information on Hyper-Threading technology from the Intel website, please click this link:

FYI for licensing issues with hyper-threading technology, read this document from Microsoft:

Please see the following Dell Knowledge Base article below for a full explanation of Hyper-threading:

3.       Spare Parts and Upgrades

These Customer Kits include the processor, heatsink and instructions.

400Mhz Front-Side Bus processor
311-3071       2.4Ghz Celeron processor with 128KB Cache

533Mhz Front-Side Bus processor
311-3073       2.26Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache

800Mhz Front-Side Bus processors
311-3074       2.4Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache
311-3075       2.8Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache
311-3076       3.2Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache

All 7-digit parts SKU's (normally) listed above are sold as new items from Dell. While we do not currently have a supply of new processors from Intel, we do have such processors available from our Refurbished parts stockrooms. Parts in these stockrooms are labeled as refurbished but are, in fact, either reconditioned parts or, in the majority of cases, new parts that have been transferred to our stockrooms for use by Dell Server Technical support. Below are the 5-digit part numbers of these processor service kits we offer:

400Mhz Front-Side Bus processors
J1149       2.0Ghz Celeron processor with 128KB Cache
K1136       2.4Ghz Celeron processor with 128KB Cache

533Mhz Front-Side Bus processors
C1427       2.26Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache

800Mhz Front-Side Bus processors
F0068       2.4Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache
C0724       2.8Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache
D0116       3.2Ghz Northwood processor with 512KB Cache
M5270       3.4Ghz Prescott processor with 1Mb Cache

Below are part numbers for the accompanying Heatsink and Shroud Assemblies and Thermal Interface Pads necessary for the processor. All 7-digit SKU's (normally) listed above include the below part numbers; however, the following part numbers do need to ordered with any of the above 5-digit refurbished part numbers:

9Y692       Heatsink for Celeron processors and Pentium 4 processors up to 2.8Ghz.
2X585       Plastic Shroud/Fan Assembly for Celeron processors and Pentium 4 processors up to 2.8Ghz.

9Y212       Heatsink for Pentium 4 processors 3.06 and above.
P0676       Plastic Shroud/Fan Assembly for Pentium 4 processors 3.06 and above.

C0097       Thermal Interface Pad
J2046       Syringe Tool for Thermal Interface Pad

Please note that the contents of the above part numbers are subject to change over time, as is availability of those parts. We recommend contacting our Spare Parts department at 1-800-372-3355 for pricing, availability, and purchasing of all the above parts.
