RHEL 4 Shutdown issue on Poweredge 800

Dear Specialists

I have tried many options such as :

1.  putting acpi=off or acpi=ht in the grub.conf file
2.  putting acpi=on in the grub.conf file
3.  putting apm=power_off apm=realmode_power_off in the grub.conf file
4.  chkconfig --levels 35 apmd off

None of these options can power off my server thoroughly.

The BIOS version is A01.  The Logical Processor has been disabled in the BIOS.

When acpi=off or acpi=ht is set, my display shows the following after I have chosen the shutdown function.

Halting system...
md: stopping all md devices.
md: md0 switched to read-only mode.
Synchronizing SCSI cache for disk sdb:
psmouse.c: bad data from KBC - timeout
Power down.
I need to push the power button in order to shut down the server.
*****************
If I push the power button with acpi=off or acpi=ht in the grub.conf file, the server will immediately power off without stopping the services.  I will therefore receive a warning message on next startup.

*****************
Other options will go through the normal shutdown process and return a blank screen.  The keyboard will be disabled.  I need to hold the power button for few seconds in order to power down the server.

Could you please tell me what other settings I can try to solve this problem?

Thanks a lot.

Regards
Ben

Update your kernel to RHEL4 Update 1, which fixes an ACPI locking issue, and don't disable ACPI on the kernel command line. That should resolve this.

Thanks,
Matt

The problem is solved if I use the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator to shutdown the server.

In addition, I have no difficulty to shutdown the server through the power on button WHEN I start it up without keyboard and mouse.
