Ubuntu Server on Poweredge T110 2

Can anyone help in installing Ubuntu Server on Poweredg T110 2. The OS installation fails to detect the hard drive.

Do I need some other controller for it?

Hello arti123

There are some controllers that are Windows only. Which RAID controller do you have? Also, have you created a RAID array?

Thanks

We don't have any extra controller. The system came with PERC S300/S100 controller ,but it seems it is a fake RAID and doesn't support Linux distributions. During installation it fails to detect disks . We have tried both RAID and NON-RAID configurations . After some searching i found that we need to buy a H200 Card for this. We just want to make sure if H200 willl support Linux.

The S100 is a driver based RAID controller. It only work with Windows. You can go into the system BIOS and change the SATA mode(Embedded SATA) to either AHCI or ATA from RAID. This will disable the RAID functionality of the chipset and make it a normal SATA interface without RAID functionality. This should allow it to work with Linux operating systems.

Yes, the H200 is supported in Linux operating systems.

Thank you. So, do we need to buy the H200 Card? Or just changing the SATA mode to AHCI/ATA will work for linux?

Yes, changing the mode to anything other than RAID will allow it to work. It will work like a normal SATA interface on a desktop/laptop. You will not have the ability to create RAID arrays. All drives will operate in a JBOD/non-RAID mode.

If you want to be able to create RAID arrays you will need a RAID controller like the H200.

Thanks

I tried it. Changed the SATA mode to ATA but it didn't work. Linux Server couldn't recognise the hard disk.

Are the drives still cabled to the S300 controller, or are they cabled to the system board? They will need to be cabled to the system board.

Yeah. I forgot that. Thanks. I'll try it. But, won't doing that void the warranty?

No, you can reconfigure the server all you want.

Sorry for late response. I tried it but couldn't connect the hard drive directly to the board. It needs some different cable. Can I get that cable in India?

It should be a standard SATA cable that you can buy in any computer store. The SATA cable we sell for the T110 to connect to the system board is just a bundle of 4 regular SATA cables. The part number is J07Y2. This is the contact page for India:

Q. Where can I find replacement parts for my Dell system?
A. Yes. They may be found on the Spare Parts Website or by calling 1800-425-4002.

Thanks
