windows installation power edge 2650 and 2550
hello i have recently been given 2 servers to work on a install a fresh operating system however both these server have the same issue where you set the boot device in the bios to cd/dvd drive and then restart and insert a windows install cd into the drive but the server will not boot to this disk and continues to boot to the hard drive os.
however if you insert a live cd like erd commander for example the server will boot to and run the cd i had the same problem on the power edge 2850 but i could boot from a usb flash stick, but this is not possible on the 2550 and 2650 as a usb flash device is not shown in bios.
has anybody got an idea to what teh problem is or how to get around this fault??

An IDE laptop drive should work, but 2003 should be in CD format. There are some media kits, though, that use DVD format though.
No go. The 2650 supports only 32-bit processors; 2008x86 is the latest Windows Server OS you can install on the 2650.

Many "basic" Linux distros will work fine on the 2550/2650 - more graphical interfaces like Unity and Gnome3 may not run very well on them, but the server editions and the more resource-friendly interfaces should be fine.
While the 2850 will run 64-bit OS's, several have reported issues installing 2012R2 on them, with nobody finding a resolution yet. It runs 2008R2 perfectly (use the 2008x64 video drivers), and 2012 runs respectably on it with 2008R2 drivers for PERC and 2008x64 drivers for video (2012 is not supported by Dell on the 28x0). Graphics/video are a bit demanding for the 28x0 hardware, but should run the services fine (28x0 does NOT support VT). I have not yet tried 2012R2 on a 2850 to see if I can find a workaround for the issues others have reported in installing it.

i cant remember what the drive it has in it nor the disk, however the os i am trying to install is server 2003, will try another drive that is defiantly dvd, is the connector for the optical drive a standard laptop style ide connector?

however i am considering looking into putting server 2012 r2 on the poweredge 2650

Thank you very much for your input, I will try that fix tomorrow, one last question What about running server 2012 r2 on the 2850 and running Linux server on the 2550 ?

2650 and 2550 do not support booting to USB devices.
DVD drives were not standard on older systems like the 2550/2650 ... are you trying to boot to a DVD or CD, and does your system have a CD drive or a DVD drive? What Windows version are you trying to boot/install?
Make sure that CD/DVD is listed in the boot sequence AND that it is enabled (may be a checkmark to the left showing it is enabled).

How about booting with a WInPE and then use the "DISKPART" to see the drive letter and try booting in that way ?!
