Best way to configure a MD1000 Disk Array when priority is on size and not speed

Hi,

I have a Dell PowerVault MD1000 Disk Array which I will populate with 15 x 2TB enterprise-grade SATA hard drives.  What is the best RAID type and adequate number of hot spares to have given that priority is NOT on speed but on having the largest possible single partition?  I am especially interested about knowing the statistical benefits of either not having any hot spares, vs. 1 hot spare, 2 hot spares, etc. for my situation.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

thanks!

Hello Sul,

With the current setup that you have it would be best to run either Raid 10 or raid 6. & with either raid I would have 2 global hotspares configured.  Now you can also configure the MD1000 in a raid 5 as well & also I would have 2 hotspares as well, but I would say that depending on the data that will be on the raid array.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Sam,

thank you so much!  this is exactly the advice I was looking for. The array will be used strictly for storing and retrieving files.  The type of file can be anything from a word document to a video.   The storage will not cater to any DB files or any mission critical applications of any kind.  We will also have a tape backup library that will frequently backup the data on this array.  Given this scenario, would you disagree with going with RAID 5 with 2 hot spares given that one of the the priorities is to have the largest possible single partition?

Thanks!
