Connect a PowerEdge R540 to a PowerVault MD1200

We have upgraded one of our servers from an R530 to an R540. We want to move the MD1200 that was previously connected to the R530 over to the R540. I tried simply moving the PERC H800 HBA from the R530 to the R540 but this prevented the server from booting, so my suspicion is that the H800 is too old for the modern hardware. Google agrees with me.

Is there an HBA that I can install in my R540 that will allow me to connect the MD1200?

I did ask a Dell sales contact and was told that I could only connect an MD1400 to an R540 but simply do not believe them. That's typical of the sort of thing a salesman tells you 'cos he wants you to spend lots of money with him

Any help gratefully received.

Well, there are things that Dell supports, and then there are things that work but not supported. If you are fine with the latter you can make this work.

An H840 can be connected to an MD1200. (I believe H840 is meant to go with R540 so you'd be better off than my case. I have an R820 connected to MD1200 using an H840 & it works perfectly fine - that's three generations of hardware working together in my setup)

You will need an SFF 8088 to SFF 8644 mini SAS cable. Readily available on eBay for around $25.

Thanks very much. I'll track down an H840 and let you know how I get on.

Most probably an H830 would get the job done too. But I have not tested it.

A H840 will work because we already have this combination work for several years. Keep in mind that on paper a MD12xx is not supportet on the H840 but will work without any kind of special.
Of course you need a 12G SAS HD Mini to 6G SAS Mini cable but these are not special because also today you need to connect 6G Devices like SAS Tapes to a 12G HBA.
