MD1000 DAS storage Re-Location in R730

Hi,

I have one customer currently he is using MD1000 with PERC 6/e with 600GB x 14 SAS HDDs.

Configuration is Two RAID-5 and One Hot Spare DAS attached and running with PE2950, using as file shared storage, Operating system is windows server 2003

Now he wants to relocate this storage with new Dell R730 server operating system windows server 2008 or server 2012

Question:

1-  Same Raid controller PERC 6/e can be install in R730?

2-  Old data can get retrieve easily?

3-  Is there any chance to lose the data?

Before start the work I need answer of above questions and to be safe side what is per-caution steps.

I am waiting for your kind support and help to complete the task

With many thanks and regards

Hello, shkasim.

So, 1. Can the PERC 6/4 be installed in the R730? -Technically, yes. However, it has not been validated by our engineers. So, while you may find that it works, it's performance may be quirky. We can neither say that it can or can't work only because we haven't tested it.

We will support only 12Gb SAS cards in the 13th Gen servers.

2. Can you retrieve the data? Chances are pretty good that you can. Given the jump in OS's, the only thing I'd suggest is this: If the data on the Virtual Disks is secured in any way from the current OS (Windows 2k3), then the new OS (Windows 2k8 / 2k12) would need to reflect that same security.

3. Is there any chance of losing the data? There's always a chance of losing data, but honestly in this scenario, the chances are pretty slim.

Again, I can't guarantee that the PERC 6/e will work, but the chances are pretty good that it will.

I hope this helps. Have a great rest of the day!

Many thanks for kind support and quick response,

If I supply PERC H830 with Dell R720, MD1000 will work with this PERC controller?

Really I appreciate and many thanks for your kind reply  :)

Hello again, shkasim.

So, on this, I believe the distance between the technologies is too great. The H830 is a 12Gb SAS adapter, and the MD1000 is a 3Gb SAS box. The connections aren't even similar.

The PERC 6/e is a 3Gb SAS adapter. So, essentially you'd need to adapt from 12Gb to 6Gb (which exists), then from 6Gb to 3Gb. But I honestly don't believe that will work at all.

I would have to say in this case, no. I don't believe this adaption is functional.

I hope you get that figured out. Let me know if you have any more questions.

There is the option to get the H830 and 2 MD1400 units and then move your physical drives from the MD1000 to the 2 MD1400. The reason you'd need 2 of them is that the MD1000 holds 15 drives and the newer MD1400 (just like the MD1200) only holds 12 drives. I'd recommend to put a single raid 5 in each MD1400 (and get 1 additional drive to give each enclosure its own hotspare).

This large a step up (from PERC6 to PERC H830 (skipping the H800 and H810) isn't supported, but just like trying the PERC6e on a PowerEdge R730, it will probably work.

However, if your drives are 5+ years old it is probably a better idea to consider moving the data to new drives anyway due to the life expectancy of the drives.
